(Company)">Nauta’s</a> design DNA. Pedol’s grandfather was chief engineer aboard ocean liners, and his own formative years spent racing and cruising translated into a deep understanding of life at sea. His first steps in yachting came while still at university through the Avventura 703, a Mini Tonner designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/289" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Vallicelli Design (Company)">Andrea Vallicelli</a>, with 40 units produced in 2 years.Originally a builder and designer, the company’s early milestone was the Nauta 54, co-designed with Scott Kaufman in 1986, which introduced <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta’s</a> enduring commitment to creating spaces that are both functional and elegant. Over the following decades, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta</a> grew from its shipyard origins into a pure design house, with its methodical and technically driven approach to detailing, from cabinetry and joinery to naval architecture, forming the backbone of its style.For co-founder Massimo Gino, the longevity of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta’s</a> style lies in its restraint. “The key is to stay true to your vision, and the market recognises and rewards your style,” he explains. Its designs are characterised by clean, timeless lines that remain relevant over time – an identity that has become the studio’s hallmark.Today, under the continued leadership of Pedol and Gino, the studio is in a phase of transition. Senior designers Martino Majno and Guido Valtorta have taken on greater responsibility, steering day-to-day management as Directors. With a team of 25, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta</a> remains boutique in scale, yet with customers from all over the world.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/374548/image/large-080ea95ec387932456334ff0a02bb685.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/374548">Versatility at its heart<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta Yachts</a> has built its reputation on the rare ability to balance bespoke superyacht projects with large-scale series production, applying the same ethos across both. As Guido Valtorta explains, the process is not about switching mindsets but refining solutions: “We don’t swap the approach, we adjust solutions.” Whether developing a 140-metre custom yacht or a 40-foot production model, the guiding principles remain the same; functionality, elegance and clean lines, with the design tuned to the parameters of scale, cost and build method.This cross-pollination between segments has become a defining strength of the studio. Insights from production projects sharpen an awareness of efficiency and usability that benefits custom yachts, and vice versa.. As Valtorta notes, the detailing and refinement expected on large superyachts find their way into production models, raising standards across the board.For Martino Majno, the diversity of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta’s</a> portfolio ensures both creative stimulation and business resilience. “We are busy in several fields, bespoke custom design, semi-production and series production; we find this part very stimulating because the parameters are different and it ensures continuity of boats being built.”Series production remains an important pillar of the business. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta’s</a> long-standing partnership with Beneteau has produced some of the most successful cruising sailing yachts in recent decades, with over 400 units of the Oceanis 51.1 sold since its launch (and more than 10,000 yachts sold over the Oceanis range in the last decade).<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/374552/image/large-37b2b71f4fc98d9fc3cf5c99c8a6d815.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/374552">A philosophy of silent luxuryIf <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta’s</a> versatility defines its scope, its design language defines its identity. “We believe in silent luxury,” says Valtorta. “We don’t shout with design. Instead, we create spaces where elegance comes through proportions, lights, materials and colors.” This philosophy favours architectural coherence over ostentation, with interiors that remain timeless and adaptable to different owners.For Gino, this philosophy is deeply human-centred. “Luxury in yachting is about more than styling. It’s about creating a functional, well-organised space that allows owners to fully immerse themselves in the natural environment.” Pedol echoes this sentiment, underlining the importance of a connection to the sea: “Outdoor living is an essential aspect of our design.”This ethos has been central to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta’s</a> superyacht work since Project Light, an 80-metre designed in 2006. “Starting with Project Light 80m in 2006, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta</a> has been a forerunner of a new generation of superyachts, with elegant, soberly centre-positioned glass-wrapped superstructures, so that much more importance is devoted to the exterior spaces,” explains Pedol. “This design vision enhances a higher quality of life on board, achieved through blending with the surrounding environment.”The principle has continued to evolve. “We’ve been working on this for some time, evolving the design to make our yachts more autonomous, efficient and functional, without compromising on the quality of spaces, materials and finishes,” adds Gino.This approach is visible in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9442" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dragonfly142.0m (465'11&quot;)Lürssen Yachts2024">Dragonfly</a>, where a reimagined interior layout introduced a flowing, circulation through the decks, creating a new way of experiencing space at sea. (Company)">Nauta</a> are currently in-build, including an 80m in the Netherlands, two 70m in Ancona in Italy, a 44m at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7417" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Conrad Shipyard, Inc (Company)">Conrad Shipyard</a> in Poland, two <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13670" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CdM Nauta Air 11033.5m (109'11&quot;)Cantiere delle Marche (CdM)2026">CDM Nauta Air 110</a>’. Within the series production segment, multiple projects for Beneteau Group and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7265" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantiere Del Pardo (Company)">Cantiere del Pardo</a> are under way, with new models recently unveiled at the Cannes Yacht Show 2025. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. (Company)">Nauta’s</a> workload is both diverse and steady, yet the studio is cautious about growth. “We don’t want to be 100 people,” notes Valtorta. “We want to remain at a human scale, a studio where ideas are shared around a single table.”What unites this body of work is continuity: a belief that good design lies not in spectacle, but in creating yachts that feel natural to live aboard. “A yacht should never feel like a hotel,” says Valtorta. “It must feel like a boat, a place where you connect to the sea, where space, function and beauty work together.”Nearly four decades on from its founding, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/153" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nauta Yachts S.r.l. Fold-down bulwarks create a 135-square-metre beach club aft, served by a carbon-fibre A-frame crane that handles tender operations and reveals a gym, sauna and dive centre below. Step onboard Tremenda with designer Giorgio Cassetta

Giorgio Cassetta shares his insights into the design of the 45m custom explorer Tremenda.

Aegua, meaning “water” in Ligurian, was founded a year ago by Emanuele Camporese and Stefano Dellepiane. Based in Viareggio and working internationally, the firm supports owners on large yacht projects, typically from about 50-metres, from first concept and feasibility through to delivery. Its work spans new build management and owner representation, specification and contract review, shipyard supervision, major refits and conversions and delivery support.SuperYacht Times sat down with both founders to discuss why they set up the company, current industry trends and their plans for the years ahead.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/377981/image/large-7bf3c631d89441f178d3e40d8f751f23.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/377981">Why they founded AeguaPrior to founding Aegua, both Camporese and Dellepiane gained extensive experience in the superyacht sector, with Camporese working on the naval side at Fincantieri. “Before Aegua, each of us had an industry phase, then a freelance phase, and then the Aegua phase,” Camporese said, adding that he had “always had the idea of going out on my own” but waited until he had matured his skills across very different phases of the industry, at which point“ the moment was right to create a company providing integrated, high-level services.” He noted that yachting “does not forgive errors”, so the venture required “the right partner with the same vision.”Both held senior technical roles at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a>, working extensively on large projects. As Dellepiane explained: “I started in a technical office as the interface with class and flag, dealing from the outset with surveyors from different flags. I then held several technical roles and became project engineer on 100-metre-plus yachts, in particular IJE and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5652" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mar107.0m (351'1&quot;)Benetti SpA2020">Mar</a>, and in the case of Lana I followed the project from the pre-contract stage through to delivery.”Reflecting on that period, Camporese said: “Custom work is rewarding, but semi-custom or series production is more demanding because one decision is replicated across, one hopes, dozens of hulls, which makes it a steep learning experience.” He added: “After that I began working for owners on projects at different shipyards of different sizes and nationalities. On some projects I served as an owners’ representative, on others as a surveyor. I worked as a freelancer from 2017, and Stefano from 2022, prior to coming together to form Aegua in late 2024.”Together, their distinct areas of expertise, one rooted in flag and class authority and the other in production, oversight and owner representation, form a set of complementary skills that integrate naturally, shaping Aegua as a technically balanced and highly versatile consultancy capable of delivering a wide spectrum of services to clients. These range from naval architecture, HAZID assessments, R&amp;D support and warranty management to pre-contractual analysis, surveys, project feasibility and optimisation, the evaluation of novel and clean technologies, quality control, technical consultancy and full owner representation throughout a project’s lifecycle.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/377978/image/large-f4f8deef06efe032b9ad2ec85df61146.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/377978">What Aegua doesAegua works on the owner’s side from the first concept through to testing and delivery. Engagements start pre-contract, where the team scrutinises specifications and drafts to help the parties reach balanced terms. Early work includes feasibility and “proof of concept” studies to test whether an owner’s idea is buildable, compliant and, where relevant, resalable. As Dellepiane notes, concept work assesses technical feasibility first, then the economic and commercial case.During construction Aegua provides proactive site supervision, formalises changes and oversees testing and delivery. Camporese frames the aim as helping “the client and the shipyard reach what the client wants without creating problems”, drawing on knowledge of the industry, the supply chain and applicable regulations.Beyond new build, the firm has been involved in large refit projects, including a refit where &nbsp;a privately registered superyacht converted into commercial charter service with the necessary technical upgrades, flag-state approvals and class surveys. Aegua also conducts feasibility studies for conversions and life-extension projects. The practice works internationally on larger projects and does not act as a broker or long-term management company, integrating with those disciplines when required.Aegua has been involved in recent projects currently in build at different stages of development. They also revealed a number of ongoing developments, including an explorer under 500 GT, a full-custom yacht over 1,000 GT, a 100-foot motor catamaran, a fully custom 50-metre project, a pre-contract phase for a superyacht, and a major refit involving a complete repowering and significant structural modifications.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/377976/image/large-1ebe002d2756ff9b7ad963077ec9593f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/377976">Trends in the industry&nbsp;Aegua’s founders describe a changing client profile, with a younger cohort favouring pragmatism and personalisation. “They want a single point of contact, and Aegua provides an end-to-end service,” the duo notes. Layouts are trending towards convivial, less formal spaces, with areas to spend time with friends and family and, in some cases, a chase boat for getting around.They also see a clear shift to larger projects in Italy. Asked whether Italian builders are pushing into bigger sizes, Camporese argued that the country’s major groups now have the “production capacity and competences” to deliver at 80-metres “quite comfortably”. With demand moving up in size, he asked, “why not build in Italy?”, noting that owners are “smart and business-minded” and buy where they see value. Dellepiane pointed to a favourable quality–price balance and recent investment in infrastructure, and observed that the growing presence of Italian suppliers in Northern Europe suggests a simple conclusion: “why not build directly in Italy?”On the regulatory front, they note, also thanks to Dellepiane’s extensive knowledge of flag requirements and compliance, that the landscape has become far more complex. Camporese highlighted that when they entered yachting in 2005–2006 the REG code “was 50 pages”; today, with annexes, “you get an encyclopaedia”, with IMO committees issuing continual revisions. His point is that teams must stay tightly aligned with evolving rules from the pre-contract stage onward. Dellepiane added that once a yacht passes 500 GT the main constraints become “constructive and design” rather than purely regulatory, which makes early, regulation-literate engineering even more important.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/377980/image/large-beaeb533e810db057d8ced5ecd557778.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/377980">Emphasis on methanol fuel efficiency and future projectsOn sustainability the founders prioritise demand reduction over powertrain novelty. As Dellepiane put it, “The first way to be ‘green’ is to reduce onboard energy consumption passively,” followed by “heat recovery” to lock in the gains. They note that hybrid systems are well understood, but without proper recovery “the effect of other technologies is diluted”. In practice their advisory work spans thermal loss reduction, heat-recovery strategies, compliance planning and risk assessment.In addition to improving efficiency, they are mapping the wider landscape of alternative fuels, with biofuel options such as HVO and FAME included within their evaluations. Camporese said they delivered “a complete feasibility study for full methanol propulsion” in 2023 and travelled to Sweden in November to examine early methanol applications with class and two international design offices, one in yachting and one naval.
