In response to the overwhelming support from friends and colleagues, Karen’s friend Shannon McCoy has organised a fundraiser to assist with Angelina’s living expenses and education. No donation is too small and any contribution is greatly appreciated.A Celebration of Life will be held in Karen’s honour on 25 January 2025 in Boca Raton, Florida. Recently, the Asia-Pacific region has been increasing its share in the construction of yachts over 30-metres in length.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332002/image/large-fea235340d9ae4c2209734e97934a880.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332002">During the summit, SuperYacht Times' Head of Intelligence, Ralph Dazert, presented the <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/market-reports/asia-pacific-superyacht-market-report-2024" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Asia-Pacific Market Report 2024</a>, which outlined this trend. According to the report, as of the beginning of 2024, builders from the Asia-Pacific region accounted for 509 out of the 5,787 operating yachts over 30-metres worldwide, representing a share of 8.8%. This positions the region as the third-largest superyacht construction area globally, following Europe (including Turkey) and North America. Moreover, over the past decade, the share of builders from the Asia-Pacific region has increased to 9.9%, with these builders delivering 159 out of the 1,604 yachts completed between 2014 and 2023. As a result, the region now ranks second after Europe, as the influence of North America has declined.SuperYacht Times Features writer Enrico Chhibber recently visited <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> at their facilities in Zhuhai, China, just before the commencement of the Summit. After a pick up in Hong Kong, Enrico met with Fiona Li, the head of marketing at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>, and was driven across the border towards Zhuhai.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332001/image/large-5cd01e6d8d238d387a69cdc8691186e9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332001">Cheoy Lee</a> is one of the oldest family-run shipyards in the Asia-Pacific region, with a storied history. Originally founded in 1870 by the Lo family in China, the company relocated to Hong Kong in the 1930s. While the company maintains its head office and a small repair yard in Kowloon, Hong Kong, it relocated its construction facilities from Penny’s Bay to Zhuhai, China, in 1996. Since then, the Penny’s Bay site has been transformed into what is now Hong Kong's Disneyland.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/220646/image/large-5477a925a390ad705be09ae7d33a0b6e.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/220646"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> has constructed numerous innovative yachts and was one of the first shipyards in the region to use fibreglass, notably on the 39.78-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3836" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nataly39.78m (130'6&quot;)Cheoy Lee1978">Nataly</a> (formerly Shango II), which was the largest fibreglass yacht ever built at the time of her construction in 1978. However, the yard's expertise extends beyond fibreglass; it also works extensively with steel and aluminium. Among the well-known superyachts constructed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> are the 46-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2621" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Avalon46.0m (150'11&quot;)Cheoy Lee2011">Avalon</a> and the 45-metre explorer yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2307" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Limited Risks45.0m (147'8&quot;)Cheoy Lee2007">Limited Risks</a> (formerly Marco Polo).Upon our arrival at the shipyard, we were warmly greeted by Martin Lo, the Director, and his nephew, Hans Lo, the Deputy Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>. Hans represents the fifth generation of his family to work at the company. They escorted us to the main meeting room, where Martin shared his background in yachting. Born into a shipbuilding family, his career path seemed a natural progression. He emphasised the importance of a family-run shipyard to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>'s identity. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/247078/image/large-b55615fc33411404935e67ddb8b13459.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/247078">In late 2018, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> underwent a strategic restructuring. The company's luxury production arm was rebranded as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6398" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CL Yachts (Company)">CL Yachts</a>, while larger custom builds continued under the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> brand. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> shipyards are focused on the production of commercial vessels, including offshore supply vessels, tugs, and ferries.Regarding the production ratio between commercial and pleasure yachts, Lo stated that at present it stands at 85% commercial projects and 15% pleasure craft. As for the yachts currently under construction, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> has two explorer motor yachts in the pipeline: the 39.73-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10701" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee 130 Explorer39.73m (130'4&quot;)Cheoy Lee2024">Cheoy Lee 130 Explorer</a> and the 32.76-metre Cheoy Lee 107. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/332003/image/large-040340f503dfd284944242680f218609.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/332003">Lo then explained that the city of Zhuhai and the surrounding area has developed into a hub for the production and refit of commercial vessels. Additionally, he mentioned that some local shipyards have recently started to venture into yacht construction.When asked about the state of the domestic yacht market, Lo explained that the majority of yachts built in China are intended for international markets. He specified that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a>'s primary clientele has traditionally been in North America, with additional clients in Europe. In 2022, the company broadened its international footprint by appointing a dealer in Australasia, SE Asia, Hong Kong and Middle East. .<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/182372/image/large-00a4e228745d20b66ec42741673de3d5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/182372">As we commenced the tour of the facilities, we viewed several commercial projects along with the 39.73-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/10701" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee 130 Explorer39.73m (130'4&quot;)Cheoy Lee2024">Cheoy Lee 130</a>, currently under construction for a returning client. She has a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, and features exterior design and naval architecture by Overing Yacht Designs, while her interior was penned by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sylvia Bolton Design, Inc. (Company)">Sylvia Bolton Design</a>.&nbsp;During our tour onboard, it was evident to see Lo’s passion for yacht building and emphasis on quality. He shared that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> had formed a partnership with Genesis, an Italian furniture company based in Tuscany, to supply parts for the yacht interiors. Dutch yacht design studio <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Mulder Design</a> has unveiled the renderings for a new 115-metre superyacht concept, White Coral, the largest project the studio has designed to-date.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325082/image/large-1482c604c916b991292648587c8ce624.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325082">The yacht concept White Coral features a timeless tiered deck design, with design elements which create a modern aesthetic. Key features onboard include an expansive beach club, forward hemlock deck and a sophisticated exterior and relaxing interior design.Based in the Netherlands, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Mulder Design</a> offers exterior styling, naval architecture and engineering for motor yachts. Over the past 40 years, they have seen around 1,000 of their designs built, including the 69.2-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5993" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Spectre69.2m (227'0&quot;)Benetti SpA2018">Spectre</a> and the 51.82-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/517" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cheoy Lee (Company)">Cheoy Lee</a> yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3842" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Seashaw51.82m (170'0&quot;)Cheoy Lee2004">Seashaw</a>. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325086/image/large-b5eeab0a276f2d5c1e1aec46fab7126e.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325086">Designing White Coral&nbsp;“When we started this project a couple of years ago, we wanted to do a larger yacht as typically our projects range up to 60 metres,” explained Bas Mulder, owner at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Mulder Design</a>. “We decided to really show what we can do, so we settled on 115-metres, and from there we took a rough idea, developed and expanded the concept, and produced some sketches which we showed at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show (Company)">Monaco Yacht Show</a>.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Mulder Design</a> developed this design, following interest from a client, creating full 3D renders and some basic calculations. “We didn’t work on a full general arrangement, although we did create the block plan to define the spaces needed for guests, crew, accommodation and technical areas,” commented Bas Mulder.“We wanted to show that far from being just technical designers, we can offer our skills and experience of creating stunning exterior designs to any size yacht, including interior demands and thereby perfectly fusing function and form.”The name White Coral draws inspiration from the organic gemstone of the same name, which is formed in the deep ocean by marine organisms called polyps, who build intricate skeletons over time, resulting in the formations we recognise as coral reefs.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325083/image/large-405eff349319888d1babe658168a7165.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325083">White Coral has a strong astrological significance and is often worn for financial success, health benefits and to symbolise peace, purity, courage and fearlessness. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Mulder Design</a> solidified that this captures the essence of the White Coral project and that this is the driving force behind her design.&nbsp;“At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Mulder Design</a>, there’s a core ethos we apply to everything we do, which is to create a long-lasting, timeless design rather than something that can be identified by a particular era or fashion. The key for us is always to have long, elegant and simple lines, then enhance them without adding too many fussy details which most of the time merely distract the eye,” added Bas Mulder.White Coral is characterised by a forward-leaning stance, with long sculpted exterior lines to create a sleek and sumptuous profile. “People like classic proportions, and they have certain expectations. Our exterior designs aim to meet those classic proportions, then exceed those expectations,” commented Bas Mulder.“I always try to bring it back to balance and once you have the flow of the hull and superstructure you can start adding more detail, such as smaller shapes or key motifs and style elements, sharp angles or rounded features – that way you can more easily adapt to any client’s individual taste while ensuring the overall design is at its core harmonious.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/325085/image/large-89348fe7a545f4ef0168a87c8ba0f6ca.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/325085">Key features onboard White CoralWhite Coral remains true to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Mulder Design</a> DNA, with a signature vertical mast shape, which can be seen in their design for over a quarter of a century and reverse fashion plates, which remain a key characteristic of a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/102" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mulder Design (Company)">Mulder</a> yacht.&nbsp;White Coral features a large swimming pool on her main deck, alongside an 18-metre by eight-metre beach club, complete with opening side hull doors to create expansive terraces on the sea.&nbsp;The bow of White Coral includes a fully certified helipad, with an under-deck bow helicopter hangar. I worked across the Mediterranean and the US and met Dominika six years ago when we worked onboard together. Then, in 2020, we decided to move away from crewing and start the company. I first started it on my own, and once I had more work, we built it together. In the beginning, we just had one yacht and were doing charters. Then, step by step, friends and colleagues in our network started to refer us. It brought us many new clients who were scared of conventional travel and turned toward the yachting industry. The charter season of 2022 was an excellent season for us. Being ex-crew members has been so beneficial for us in building our company, as we began by utilising our existing yachting network.Antoni: Being a young company, in the beginning, it took some time to gain the trust of brokers and clients and go through all the correct processes and certifications, but we are there now and are much more established. Transitioning into yacht brokerage felt like a natural progression for us. While we had to learn the professional aspects of brokerage, our first-hand experience onboard gives us a deep understanding of crew dynamics and technical operations. When we assist in selling or purchasing a yacht, we discuss all aspects with the crew and go onboard the vessel, allowing us to give an in-depth technical perspective that sets us apart. We always knew we wanted to do sales, but we started with charter and then it developed. Our big goal at the moment is to get more yachts in our portfolio above 60 metres for charter to allow us to have more yachts to propose to our clients.&nbsp;Dominika: We have quite a lot of clients that come back to us each year since we began, which is great. In terms of the clients requesting charters, we have definitely experienced the wave of the younger generation entering the industry. We work closely with a lot of Captains and have built these relationships, so a lot of our business comes from these referrals. We have quite a big CA charter listing for an agency our size. We have a genuine passion for what we do, and we hope to bring a younger, more dynamic perspective to the brokerage industry through ourselves and by building our team out. There is also the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI), which has enormous potential to shape the industry's future. Many clients coming into the industry have made their money in these technology sectors, such as AI and cryptocurrency, so it will almost become obligatory for the industry to accept these developments.
