Dunya Yachts

Once a dominant force on the global superyacht scene, American shipyards have dwindled significantly over the past decade or so. To understand how the industry is adapting, we travelled to Seattle and Vancouver – two hubs of Pacific Northwest boatbuilding with deep maritime roots.&nbsp;The US has long been a cornerstone of the global superyacht market. Yet evolving buyer behaviour, international competition, shifts in economic conditions and evolving business models, have brought major challenges. The once-favourable euro-dollar exchange rate has flipped, making European yards more attractive to American buyers. Domestic builders like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/106" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Trinity Yachts (Company)">Trinity</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/149" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Christensen Shipyards, LLC. (Company)">Christensen</a> have closed their doors, while others have seen production slow dramatically. This reflects a broader shift in how North American shipyards are approaching production, design and market strategy – especially in light of growing competition from countries like Turkey and Taiwan.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/359371/image/large-0b776d92c59afa39dd2b3f6c4c5ee092.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/359371">Recalibrating at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/217" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Westport Yachts (Company)">Westport</a>A telling example is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/217" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Westport Yachts (Company)">Westport Yachts</a> on Washington’s Pacific coast. At its peak, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/217" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Westport Yachts (Company)">Westport</a> delivered up to a dozen composite yachts annually, including more than 75 of its best-selling 112-foot series over two decades. The yard’s success was underpinned by its speculative production strategy, which allowed clients to take delivery within six to twelve months. This helped the shipyard maintain a steady flow of production and consistent revenue while keeping the workforce busy. In 2003, it opened a purpose-built yard in Port Angeles to build larger yachts and launched a dozen hulls in its flagship 50-metre series. But in 2014, a change in ownership saw a shift to a build-to-order model. Production slowed substantially, and with it, the yard’s competitive edge.&nbsp;“Looking ahead, I’m cautiously optimistic,” says <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/217" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Westport Yachts (Company)">Westport</a> President Daryl Wakefield. “We’ve returned to building on spec and currently have two yachts in our 41-metre series under construction – one of them speculative – the first since our strategic pivot. If successful, this could mark the beginning of a turnaround. But with fewer yachts in build, maintaining our workforce and infrastructure is a real balancing act.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/4207/image/large-d7c841a1a71fd42ffa09f5c253428ec6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/4207">Delta on the moveDown the road in Seattle, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta Marine</a> is equally adept at building in composite or steel and aluminium, evidenced over the years by yachts like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3862" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Steadfast46.03m (151'0&quot;)Delta Marine1999">Affinity</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4814" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonstone79.2m (259'10&quot;)Delta Marine2016">Albatross</a>,&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1688" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Starship56.39m (185'0&quot;)Delta Marine2001">Gallant Lady</a>,&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3973" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Invictus65.5m (214'11&quot;)Delta Marine2013">Invictus</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4887" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Endless Summer50.0m (164'1&quot;)Delta Marine2017">Endless Summer</a>. The company has mostly operated under the radar, but is beginning to share more news about its activities. Traditionally focused on custom yachts for private use with strict non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), many of its yachts have remained under the same ownership for decades. However, two composite vessels currently in build – 45-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12551" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Project Zembra 45.3m (148'7&quot;)Delta Marine2026">Project Zembra</a> and 47-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/13348" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Project Ammo47.48m (155'9&quot;)Delta Marine2026">Project Ammo</a> – signal a move towards expanding its presence in the charter market.“These yachts represent a new direction for us,” says Michelle Jones, Vice-President at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta Marine</a>. “They will be the first in <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta Marine’s</a> history to be built specifically for charter use. It’s a big change for us, but one we’re incredibly excited about. For the first time, we’ll be able to talk openly about these yachts, show them to the public, and give potential clients the opportunity to experience the quality of a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta</a> yacht firsthand.”Building for charter use is aligned with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta’s</a> long-term strategy to grow its international footprint. Both yachts will be delivered as American-flagged vessels with Cayman Islands certification, allowing them to operate in US waters under the Jones Act, which typically restricts foreign-flagged commercial yachts from visiting consecutive American ports. The move enables these yachts to charter on the West Coast of the US, an area currently underserved by yacht charters. Jones also hinted at a new collaboration with a well-known Italian designer.“We’ve always marketed our yachts globally, but the core of our business will always be American,” she says. “That said, collaborating with high-profile designers will help <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/47" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Delta Marine (Company)">Delta</a> appeal to a broader audience, particularly in Europe, where the design factor is extremely important.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/840" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nordlund Boat Company. Inc. (Company)"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/329450/image/large-a0ea050d115ae4092d49a70ddd11b82b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/329450">Nordlund</a>: reinventing refitThe Tacoma-based <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/840" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nordlund Boat Company. Inc. (Company)">Nordlund Boat Company</a> began as a builder of composite hulls for other brands, but later evolved into a boutique yard for fully custom yachts. The 115-foot expedition yachtfisher <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6219" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cazador35.05m (114'12&quot;)Nordlund Boat Company. Inc.2018">Cazador</a>, launched in 2019, exemplifies its approach. The long-range cruiser launched in 2019 for a repeat client boasts a vacuum-operated elevator connecting all three deck levels – a highly unusual feature for the size of yacht.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/840" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nordlund Boat Company. Inc. (Company)">Nordlund</a> is currently in the process of reinventing itself again, this time as a specialist refit yard. This dovetails neatly with the growing trend among owners to refurbish their existing yachts rather than build new. In fact, despite the downturn in new construction, the refit market in the US has continued at full blast with 435 refit shipyard visits noted in 2024, up almost 10% from around 400 refits a year registered during 2020 and 2021. According to The State of Yachting 2025, the US tops the list of refit countries across the size range.“Refits require the same precision and skill as new builds,” says <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/840" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nordlund Boat Company. Inc. (Company)">Nordlund’s</a> project manager Matthew Fowles. “Our custom experience gives us a real edge in handling complex upgrades for owners wanting to extend the life of their vessels.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6219" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cazador35.05m (114'12&quot;)Nordlund Boat Company. Inc.2018">Cazador</a> reflects how large yachts are designed, built and used in the Pacific Northwest. Purpose-driven, often with fishing in mind, their design favours practical features over extravagant luxury. Usually built in composite for rugged adventure and long voyages (American owners have fewer qualms than their European counterparts about tackling rough seas and long crossings in fibreglass boats), the focus is on efficiency, comfort and ease of maintenance. Cooler temperatures and frequent rain also mean more protected interior spaces. While in Florida it's all about staying cool while enjoying the sunshine, in this corner of the continent yachts are more likely to have diesel heaters than AC to keep the damp out and make the shoulder seasons more tolerable when the mercury drops.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/304085/image/large-74643bb234d4146757d8587b2c60d8fa.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/304085">Rethinking the marketCanadian naval architect Gregory C. Marshall is active both at home and abroad with the exterior design of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nobiskrug (Company)">Nobiskrug’s</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Artefact80.0m (262'6&quot;)Nobiskrug2020">Artefact</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya’s</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3834" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="King Benji46.7m (153'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2024">King Benji</a> to his credit. He sees deeper cultural shifts affecting the sector and points to the reluctance among some North American clients to flaunt their wealth, which can discourage investment in high-profile new builds. Tax and financial concerns also prompt many to commission yachts overseas.“Builders need to rethink how they engage with the market,” Marshall explains. “There’s strong demand for quicker, more cost-efficient builds that don’t sacrifice quality. At the same time, today’s yachts have become overly complex, driving up costs without proportional value.”Designer Ivan Erdevicki of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1343" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ER Yacht Design (Company)">ER Yacht Design</a> echoes these concerns. Among various projects under way at home and abroad, he has a 65-metre explorer in-build at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/14" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RMK Marine (Company)">RMK</a> in Istanbul that is just one of two new-builds (the other is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/6355" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="REV Ocean194.9m (639'5&quot;)Vard Group AS2027">REV Ocean</a>) to meet Polar Code Category B – Ice Class PC 6 requirements. He kept a studio in downtown Vancouver, but moved out of the city during the lull that came with Covid pandemic. He believes superyacht builders in the US have lost ground through inaction.&nbsp;“Many shipyards haven’t kept pace with innovation, choosing to stay conservative rather than exploring new design ideas or adopting advanced technologies,” he says. “This lack of investment and forward-thinking has led to a slowdown, with some yards struggling to keep up with their European counterparts. Success comes not only from technical expertise, but also from adapting to the shifting market.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/281011/image/large-6792c137998447bd2f97efcc52fc7920.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/281011">Crescent’s comebackAlthough several shipyards in the Pacific Northwest have been mothballed or closed down, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/544" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Crescent Custom Yachts (Company)">Crescent Custom Yachts</a> is enjoying something of a renaissance, backed in part by a resurgent commercial shipbuilding industry driven by an increase in government contracts. At the time of our visit, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/544" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Crescent Custom Yachts (Company)">Crescent</a> had four custom projects over 100 feet in build: a just-launched 36-metre yacht, two more of 45 and 42 metres – all in steel and aluminium – and a 32-metre aluminium catamaran.&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/544" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Crescent Custom Yachts (Company)">Crescent</a> is also expanding its operations to include a new satellite facility south of Vancouver in White Rock (actually the site where the brand started as Crescent Beach Boatbuilders in 1988) that will grow production capacity as the company transitions from GRP to metal construction.&nbsp;“We worked with composites in the past, but switching to steel and aluminum makes more sense for our clients,” says Tim Charles, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/544" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Crescent Custom Yachts (Company)">Crescent’s</a> principal and grandson of the founder. “For custom, one-off builds, metal is the better option in terms of both time and cost efficiency.”The new facility will give <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/544" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Crescent Custom Yachts (Company)">Crescent</a> the flexibility to decide whether to bring metal fabrication in-house or outsource portions to trusted partners. Additionally, it helps counteract current tariffs on steel and aluminium between the US and Canada, which have made it difficult for shipyards on both sides of the border to plan their materials procurement with confidence (the steel hull and aluminium superstructure for its 146-foot project, for example, were built across the border in neighbouring Washington).&nbsp;As a custom builder, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/544" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Crescent Custom Yachts (Company)">Crescent</a> follows a made-to-order business model. It has also implemented an “Open-Book-At-Cost” (OBAC) billing system that charges customers transparently for time and materials, instead of working to inflexible contracts and trying to make the best deal possible with the least amount of time and money.“We view our relationships with clients as partnerships, not just contracts,” explains Charles. “We share the risks and rewards with them, which helps us stay busy and maintain a full order book. We don’t even use the word ‘change order’; we have scope revisions, and our clients are involved in those decisions along the way. When they see everything we do, it builds trust and strengthens the relationship.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/15298/image/large-a9600859d3c713b04273d8bd87c940eb.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/15298">Navigating the futureDespite ongoing pressures and uncertainties for the region’s superyacht builders, there are reasons for optimism and potential growth. The US remains the world’s largest market for superyacht ownership, which suggests there is a ready market in the offing if shipyards can adapt by streamlining production, embracing innovation and re-engaging with a new generation of owners.“The path forward is clear,” says Marshall. “To stay competitive, shipyards here need to balance customisation and luxury with the realities of modern production. Rebuilding momentum: How the US West Coast is redefining American yacht construction

SuperYacht Times travels to the US to understand the once-dominant force of American Shipyards on the global superyacht scene.

The suite is designed as a private sanctuary with wraparound windows, his-and-hers bathrooms and direct access to a foredeck lounge.&nbsp;Four VIP staterooms and two additional guest staterooms complete the layout, with two VIPs on the main deck and the remaining two on the lower deck, alongside two doubles. The programme was extensive, covering structural modifications, mechanical overhauls and aesthetic upgrades. Works began with a full drydock period, during which the hull, superstructure, overhead panels and bilges were completely repainted. All hydraulic fittings and equipment were dismantled, serviced and repainted under controlled conditions.Structural interventions included steel renewal on the forward mooring deck and repairs to the mooring door. All mooring equipment was overhauled, with the hydraulic power packs for the windlasses renewed and recommissioned. The tender garage doors, swim platform, boarding ladders and rescue tender hatch were dismantled for servicing, while hydraulic cylinders, valves and actuators were replaced. The systems were reassembled and recommissioned under the supervision of the original equipment manufacturer, Cramm.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/367297/image/large-8a6189b7abc3e43f1c6dc502c7c7b273.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/367297">The stabilisation system underwent a complete overhaul, including the removal and servicing of all four <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5020" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Quantum Marine Stabilizers (Company)">Quantum</a> fins and shafts. One fin shaft and its associated components were able to be replaced with all-original parts. Maintenance was also carried out on the bow thruster motor and electronics.In the engine room, both CAT 3516C main engines and four C9 generators were dismantled to bare block and overhauled with Caterpillar OEM components. Generator silencers and spray nozzles were also replaced.Technical systems were further upgraded with the complete renewal of the freshwater piping and pump network, along with a major overhaul of the AC and HVAC systems, led by Heinen &amp; Hopman. All engine room pumps were replaced, overboard valves removed and tested, and the electrical systems fully inspected. Key switchgear for both generator and shore power systems was renewed.On deck, the teak was sanded and re-caulked, while the swimming pool received maintenance and a full replacement of associated piping and components.Interior work was carried out by List GC, covering everything from cabinetry and hardware to overhead panels. The laundry deck flooring was replaced with vinyl, and galley appliances, including ovens, washing machines and ice makers, were upgraded. All lighting was converted to LED, and the AV/IT and entertainment systems were fully updated. All sacrificial anodes were renewed, including those fitted to the shafts and propellers.Work on the propulsion and steering systems included the replacement of rudder shaft seals and a full inspection of the main engines and generators by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1409" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MTU (Company)">MTU</a> Holland. The HVAC system was upgraded with an overhaul of the compressors and the complete replacement of one unit.Interior inspections carried out by List Design identified a number of defects, all of which were addressed during the yard period. The elevator window was replaced, teak decking was sanded and cleaned, and both the Jacuzzi and spa systems underwent maintenance. The gasket on the spa shell door was also replaced as part of a broader waterproofing review.The pool system was comprehensively serviced, including the hydraulic lift, pumps, valves and electronic controls. Sharing the stage was another of their recent creations, the 46.7-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya</a> explorer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3834" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="King Benji46.7m (153'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2024">King Benji</a>, first showcased at MYBA in the spring. These distinctive yachts – with their respective dark green and bright blue hulls and vibrant interiors – have drawn significant attention, illustrating the breadth of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/329" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Design Unlimited (Company)">Design Unlimited</a>’s capabilities.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/349343/image/large-398e4d887eff41695720ead8fb18240f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/349343">At the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, we sat down with studio founder Mark Tucker to discuss the studio’s evolution over the past five years and to gain insight into future projects.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/307905/image/large-bdf34a13d17caf5dbd5e58a4f94ccf58.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/307905">We last sat down with you in 2019; can you give us a bit of an insight into how the studio has evolved over the past five years?Well, the team has grown significantly and we now have 16 designers in the studio, doubling our pre-Covid size. That growth has really been a reaction to the work we are doing, not only the custom projects but also the production work for companies like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a>, with whom we collaborate for the interior design of all new products in their range. A production design role like that demanded an expansion of our FF&amp;E capabilities to handle the increased demand on our interior decoration, furnishings, and materials department, and therefore our FF&amp;E team has doubled in size.As a result, we have also developed our studio facilities to accommodate our expansive international samples, fabrics and material library. We have also created more inviting spaces for our clients to meet and collaborate with us, while bringing all our research materials into one space, which is a significant improvement.Since 2019, we have also gained three other new team members who focus particularly on CAD and computer visualisations. This has been partly driven by our customers' needs, especially in production, to show prospective clients exactly what the end result will look like.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/304103/image/large-d04ac3cf4161528052f5854e845c4324.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/304103">The work you do for&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a>&nbsp;is extensive. How much of the studio’s time is devoted to custom projects?We have about a 60/40 split, with 60 percent of our activities dedicated to production yachts, though of course, it varies because custom yachts come in waves; you do a lot of work over a period, then there is a quiet phase while it’s being built, and then supervision at the end. The production work helps smooth that curve and keeps the team engaged. With production, you also get to see your designs realised faster – very often only a year and a half from design to seeing it in the water, which I think is great for the team.We have also now moved into the residential sector for the first time, having recently completed a house on Venetian Islands in Miami and another down in the Florida Keys. Both of those projects came to us through existing yacht clients, so it has been a natural evolution, but we are now receiving an increasing number of requests for residential work, which is an exciting development.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/304100/image/large-cb9cedcbe323aa9be32e0afcd25bbdf0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/304100">This year was obviously huge for the studio, with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pink Shadow58.0m (190'3&quot;)Damen Yachting2023">Pink Shadow</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3834" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="King Benji46.7m (153'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2024">King Benji</a>&nbsp;exhibited at Monaco. Has there been a shift in studio perception?Yes, it was fantastic. Our yachts photograph beautifully, but they need to be experienced in person – to touch, feel, and see how the colours work. That’s something you only really get by walking through the space yourself. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3834" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="King Benji46.7m (153'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2024">King Benji</a> has also been an open boat at Fort Lauderdale this year, so anyone could take a tour onboard with the crew, which is a very unusual but exciting situation.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/307888/image/large-ee0966fbafeee87c781fa6b9ae38c89c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/307888"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/8158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pink Shadow58.0m (190'3&quot;)Damen Yachting2023">Pink Shadow</a>&nbsp;was heavily in demand at Monaco Yacht Show and she has been extensively published, which is fantastic for visibility.Regarding the perception of the studio, we’ve had strong inquiries since, but as you know, these are both unique interior design projects. We don’t stereotype ourselves by saying, “This is all we can do.” We work on a wide range of projects for a wide range of clients, and this is reflected in our portfolio. More recently, we are getting requests from clients who want something more relaxed and cosier, with little areas where they can sit and unwind, instead of large vast spaces. It’s great for the team as well, as it keeps the work challenging and interesting.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/308761/image/large-e95e2738e3cfb2350ec3c4571fa72e02.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/308761">With a team of 16, how do you balance such different identities across projects, from explorers to sailing yachts?We have a structured approach that really helps, starting each new project by working closely with the owner to define the direction through mood boards and material samples. Once we’re aligned, the project tends to fall into place. We check back at each stage to make sure we’re on track with the initial concept. If you look at our portfolio, there is a huge range, with the more sedate interiors like that of the 53-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/276" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mirage53.0m (173'11&quot;)Feadship1979">Mirage</a>, or the 54-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4899" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ravenger53.9m (176'10&quot;)Baltic Yachts2017">Ravenger</a>, which differ greatly from projects like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3834" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="King Benji46.7m (153'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2024">King Benji</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/222824/image/large-3c4d4d4f42aeaea4f2120cd0749e4670.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/222824">Can you share a bit more about your relationship with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a>?Our work with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> is highly collaborative, and we oversee the entire interior design process. We’ve worked with them for specific projects for over 20 years, but two years ago, we were asked to take on the interior work for the brand and help them develop a new look. We’re responsible for the overall material selection, and we recently launched a new collection with all-new timbers, flooring, lacquers, stones and 250 fabrics, all of which are sourced globally.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/300692/image/large-1f82a755cd34920bc7a886a85988e91b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/300692">We manage the costs, ensuring that we meet budget targets because there is a difference between the cost price and sale price, which has to align. It’s quite challenging but rewarding, and it ensures the interiors resonate with buyers worldwide – from the UK to Asia to America.When we began working with them, they wanted to redefine the ranges – the Predator, Manhattan, Yacht, and Ocean lines. We started from scratch, looking at the DNA of each line and the clients buying them. It was fascinating to see how each model serves different client needs. We helped them redefine each range with a clear identity, and that became the basis for each new design going forward.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/285706/image/large-7fef235c432aa6770f32260f642b5fe3.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/285706">We recently launched the all-new Ocean 156 at the Southampton Boat Show, which has been extremely popular. It’s a single-deck design with a flow-through main deck, creating a sense of openness. You can forget you’re on an 80-foot (about 24-metre) yacht; she feels much larger, with three decks, generous cabins, and flexible living areas. Are there any projects you’re especially looking forward to?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12790" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Simena61.61m (202'2&quot;)ARES Yachts2025">Simena</a> is particularly exciting, our first project with Ares and their first superyacht. She is progressing well and with her launch next year, she’ll become the studio’s largest yacht to date. The discussion explored his entry into the yachting industry, his collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>, the diverse yachts he has designed, and the future plans for his design house.Entrance to the yachting industryBorn in Argentina, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a> has had a passion for racing sailing yachts since his childhood. With a background in civil engineering, he moved to Barcelona, in Spain, where he worked in architecture for a year. “At that time in Barcelona, there was only one school, a sailing school here in Barcelona, and they asked me to be a partner. So I left architecture and started to sail. The sailing school operated from May to October, and during the winter, we would assist shipyards or transport vessels and yachts,” recounted <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;He described his entry into yacht design as accidental, beginning with a desire to design a boat for himself. "By chance, I found a mould of a hull behind an old sailing school building. I asked around, ‘What is this?’ They told me it belonged to a businessman, so I asked, ‘Do you have his contact details?’ They gave me a phone number. It turned out to be a very nice racing 46 foot sailing boat designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/171" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="German Frers (Company)">Germán Frers</a>,” he added.Continuing the story, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a> clarified that he initially tried to buy the hull to build a boat for himself. “At that time, I was collaborating with a shipyard, and I met the owner at the yacht club here in Barcelona," he recalled. "He saw me drawing a new interior design on an A4 leaflet and asked what I was doing. I told him that I found this hull and was trying to buy it to make myself a nice racing sailing boat.”The owner then asked <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a> to design a similar boat for him, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a> agreed, noting: "We didn't discuss time or money; that was really the extent of our conversation." He continued, stating: "three months later, I called him and presented the design for a 47-footer. He liked it and said, alright, I will build it.’ That was how it all began, just as simple as that.”After establishing his eponymous label, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a> transitioned from designing small racing sailing yachts to creating both sailing and motor superyachts. He described this shift as a “natural evolution,” driven by customer demand for larger sailing yachts and motor yachts.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Marcelo Penna Group</a>To <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a>, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Marcelo Penna Group</a> can be characterised as a "one-stop studio," involved in every aspect of yacht design, from exterior styling and structural work to interior design." He credits his multifaceted approach to his background as a civil architect. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/272616/image/large-4d02988bb40a3093e5f7d97d21b314f0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/272616">Other services provided by the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Marcelo Penna Group</a> in the superyacht sector include refit consultancy and the supply of technical equipment for charter yachts, such as water toys, bed linen, and crockery. "We have worked with several yachts, including the 72-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2390" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Axioma72.0m (236'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2013">Axioma</a>," <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a> outlined "We design and create new spaces for customers onboard and have completed numerous refits, from staterooms to other areas. For example, we have added features to helipads and redesigned gyms."The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Marcelo Penna Group</a>'s services also extend to commercial vessels, encompassing various types, including ferries, passenger vessels, and cargo ships. The company is also active in the car racing sector, collaborating with a supply chain company that builds batteries for the Formula E Extreme series, an international off-road racing competition featuring electric SUVs that race in remote locations around the world, such as the Arctic.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/272602/image/large-ff67cb960f942fa177d50a4dfcac625f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/272602">Penna also highlighted that the group is a family firm. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a>'s wife contributes to the styling, while both his son and daughter are also actively involved in the business. "My son works both at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/97" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 Barcelona (Company)">MB92</a> and with us (...) and my daughter, who recently completed her studies in interior architecture in Paris, has been working with the firm for the past seven years. The whole family is involved in the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Marcelo Penna Group</a>," he emphasised. Today, the firm has a global presence, with additional bases in Monaco and in Houston, Texas.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/272619/image/large-4727695bf79e0f1eb03d73fae79e421c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/272619">Key projectsThe largest yacht he has designed, for which he oversaw both the exterior design as well as naval architecture, is the 65.2-metre Phinisi yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5648" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lamima65.2m (213'11&quot;)C.V. Mutiara Murni2014">Lamima</a>, delivered in 2014. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a> explained that he first became involved in the project and began working with Phinisi yachts after being &nbsp;introduced to the client by a captain he knew from an <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ISA Yachts (Company)">ISA</a> 47 superyacht. "The client proposed that I design and build a Phinisi," he said. "But they wanted the largest and safest Phinisi ever built. We became the first to classify a Phinisi with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1457" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RINA (Company)">RINA</a>; it was the largest of its kind at that time, constructed entirely of wood."<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/227423/image/large-ba211dd267d2ded2385225c4a16658a0.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/227423"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a>’s current main yacht project is a custom 37.5-metre explorer yacht by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>. He revealed that the project originated through a network of brokers from Nice who introduced him to a client."The client had very specific requirements and was looking for something unique. We initially began our search in northern Spain, but then it expanded to Italy, leveraging contacts there. Eventually, we reached <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/220" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri di Pisa (Company)">Cantieri di Pisa</a>, where we closed the deal.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/320474/image/large-1ea029972a837c0745b0bd82df929491.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/320474">Spanish design landscapePenna also shared insight into the state of the Spanish yachting industry, particularly in terms of construction and design, and why it has not developed as significantly as in other southern Mediterranean countries like Italy, France, and Turkey, despite being very present in the refit market for large superyachts. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a> noted that while the sector–especially the sailing and motor yacht segments–was growing, a significant cultural challenge existed in Spain.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/233768/image/large-7346fff05e0b4fd8140ee6fd46062ecb.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/233768">“The problem,” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a> pointed, “is rooted in the history and political developments during the Franco era. Yachting was seen as an exclusive activity for the elite–a very closed group. No ordinary person could afford a yacht in Spain. This exclusivity, combined with a lack of state support for yacht construction, has hindered the industry's growth–a significant loss, given the substantial number of jobs that yacht construction can create."However, as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a> explained, "with French influence, the industry began to develop, and a few sailing yacht shipyards emerged, such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/747" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mefasa (Company)">Mefasa</a>, which built the 41.33-metre sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2262" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alejandra41.33m (135'7&quot;)Mefasa1993">Alejandra</a>. Another notable shipyard, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/412" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Astondoa S.A. (Astilleros) (Company)">Astondoa</a>, specialises in motor yacht construction."<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a> attributed the lack of Spanish designers in the superyacht sector to a cultural perception that historically viewed yacht design as more of a frivolous occupation rather than a serious profession, unlike commercial vessel design. Despite these challenges, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a> believes the direction of the yacht design landscape in Spain is on the right track, with many dedicated professionals now working to drive the industry forward. "It will, however, take time for these efforts to yield their full impact," he emphasised.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/233766/image/large-368a521574acf916a6065f8b8d50a50e.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/233766">Expansion and sustainabilityRegarding future plans, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a> revealed that his company will be expanding its presence to Mexico and Istanbul. One of the latest ventures is The Wattio, a new initiative aimed at leveraging the company's extensive knowledge in both naval architecture and electric vehicle (EV) technology. "The idea behind The Wattio," <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a> shared, "is to provide an integrated solution to shipyards or customers combining all our expertise, from naval architecture and engineering, to electrical systems and propulsion."<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1989" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Marcelo Penna (Company)">Penna</a> underlined that the company is also focusing on implementing more sustainable solutions. "We are working with hybrid systems and exploring new fuels, such as ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen. In recent months, we have been testing hydrogen fuel cells here in Barcelona, including a hydrogen-powered truck currently operating in the city. The site of the shipyard in Tuzla Bay, Istanbul, has been in his family since the 1950s and was originally the setting of their holiday home. Over the last decade <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya</a> has further established itself as a centre for complex refit projects, most notably the restoration of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/4894" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cacouna36.2m (118'9&quot;)Camper & Nicholsons Shipyard1932">Cacouna</a>, the 1938 classic yacht by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/292807/image/large-41e55fa461c986c55408cba1a0578e73.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/292807">Sedat studied in the US and spent time as a project manager in the construction industry specialising in enterprise resource planning (he is also a champion skier and part of his office is devoted to a workshop for preparing his ski equipment). This experience gave him an international outlook and business-savvy approach that was rare among Turkish yacht builders when he set up <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya Yachts</a>. Although he generally prefers to keep a low profile, we sat for a candid discussion during a recent visit to the shipyard.Why did you decide to diversify into superyachts and set up&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya Yachts</a>&nbsp;in the first place?&nbsp;The family shipbuilding and repair business was successful, but I wanted to create a top-end facility to show how serious we were about building high-quality yachts. With the exception of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise</a> [then Proteksan Turquoise], 20 years ago Turkish shipyards building yachts were rough-and-ready places with none of the modern infrastructures you see today. Another issue was the lack of management skills. Working in the construction industry taught me that good project management is essential, which is why we’ve always had a strong planning department at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya</a>. The industry has matured and today we can compete with the best. Competition from brands like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Turquoise Yachts (Company)">Turquoise</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1414" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bilgin Yachts (Company)">Bilgin</a> is the kind of competition I like, because the more good they do, the better it is for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya</a> – as long as they price higher than me! <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/206943/image/large-915ce93daa513b3d4b707f949e1e9b4f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/206943">Turkey is now rated the second-largest yacht building nation behind Italy and ahead of the Netherlands. How do you account for that growth?We know how to build boats, but Turkey also did well before the 2008 financial crisis from the overflow of enquiries in Europe, meaning when European yards hit capacity people start looking for alternatives and Turkey is ideal in terms of cost and location. The same thing is happening now. Back in 2005 you had more or less the same builders in Holland and Germany as you have today, but here the number of yards has exploded. You have guys renting a shed and trying to build 80 or 90-metre yachts, then 18 months down the road they’re out of business, which is not good for our reputation.&nbsp;That demand has also led to a shortage of skilled workers and subcontractors, which is pushing up prices. It’s easy to see why: If I’m making a decent wage and I’m happy with that wage but everyone is calling me offering me more, then I raise my prices, right? I had a fleet manager in here recently enquiring about a refit and he was amazed that it cost more than in the Mediterranean. Is that still the case?It’s true we don’t get the big budgets, but the price difference is less now than it used to be and the Italians can be very flexible with their pricing. Even when there is zero price difference between Italy and Turkey, 80 percent of clients will choose to build in Italy; not because of the quality, but because Made-in-Italy is a brand and Made-in-Turkey isn’t. By the same token, we can build to the same quality as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> or <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/23" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lürssen Yachts (Company)">Lürssen</a>, but our production times are longer because we’re not as efficient as they are. I’ve tried to create interest in a Turkish yacht builders’ association like SyBASS, which <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya</a> is now eligible to join, so that at least we have a common marketing strategy, but that’s mostly fallen on deaf ears.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/121707/image/large-6b32855c521010b7e5ece9ca84d33acd.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/121707" style="box-sizing: inherit; border: 0px; font-family: &quot;Open Sans&quot;, sans-serif; position: relative; max-width: 100%; margin: 1rem 0px; caret-color: rgb(0, 0, 0); color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 13.6px; font-style: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; font-weight: 400; letter-spacing: normal; orphans: auto; text-align: start; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; text-decoration: none;">Some industry people don’t like to hear this, but we’re basically in the assembly business. You have class A, class B and class C subcontractors, materials and equipment. But if you go with class C in Turkey, you’re going to end up with a class D product. At <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya</a> we project manage the best designers and subcontractors and put it all together in a first-rate facility. That’s why for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2390" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Axioma72.0m (236'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2013">Axioma</a> I chose <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/19" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Alberto Pinto (Company)">Pinto</a> for the interior and List for the outfitting, two of the most expensive contractors in the business. What does that say about production at&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/928" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dunya Yachts (Company)">Dunya</a>?That we’re custom builders and every yacht I build has to be different. It’s very difficult to sell boats on paper in Turkey, so I also have to build on spec. It can easily take a year from an initial meeting to a signed contract – and a lot can happen in Turkey in one year! If you have a yacht already in build the process moves much more quickly. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2390" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Axioma72.0m (236'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2013">Axioma</a> was built on spec and when I took her to the Monaco Yacht Show she was owned by the yard. The 90-metre project is a classic <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tim Heywood Design Ltd. (Company)">Tim Heywood</a> design with broad appeal that I acquired from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/429" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="ICON Yachts (Company)">Icon Yachts</a> and we’re finishing her with a bigger stern platform and a Sander <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/926" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sinot Yacht Architecture & Design (Company)">Sinot</a> interior. We have the finances to take that project all the way if we have to. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/64454/image/large-da4aae10b3c7040a7fb6fb68659a31f2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/64454">The catamaran was started as a supply vessel that got cancelled. We’ve now transferred the ownership and it now belongs to me. My sales pitch is that it’s a sub-500GT vessel with the same carrying capacity as a 75-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1821" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Yachting (Company)">Damen</a> that can carry 82 tons of toys and still do 21 knots. Further, I built the bow and stern of 80-metre Project Warrior by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øeino</a> at the same time as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2390" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Axioma72.0m (236'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2013">Axioma</a> and we now have a green light from Lloyds to start that up again – you need to have one big boy on the go all the time. We’re also talking to a client for a repeat of KB6 [<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3834" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="King Benji46.7m (153'3&quot;)Dunya Yachts2024">King Benji</a>] but over 500GT. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/304087/image/large-99577c3684b4bb2ab491a3ec101ef0c8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/304087">I want to prioritise quality over quantity and have three custom projects on the go at any one time with good budgets and decent margins. I also want to be closely involved in those projects because I love the project management side. That’s one thing I like about the smaller boats: you have direct contact with the client and If there’s an issue you sort it out face to face.
