After graduating from the Italian Naval Academy in Livorno and earning a degree in Naval Engineering from the University of Genoa, he launched his career that took him to Asia (Vietnam) and Europe, where he acquired experience in operational management and process optimisation.Lauriero’s previous roles include positions at the Italian Navy, Fashion Yachts, Mediterranea di Navigazione, Group Piriou, VIMATEC Engineering, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/361" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ferretti Yachts (Company)">Ferretti Superyachts</a>, and more recently, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5686" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantiere Navale Vittoria (Company)">Cantiere Navale Vittoria</a>. Their latest focus has been on alternative fuels, leading to the adoption of HVO, with Benetti noting that HVO can cut CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent compared to traditional fossil fuels.While HVO is currently the most viable option, its production is limited by the availability of raw materials. Ulstein began its thorium-powered Thor concept with a question: What if we could design and build a vessel with an abundant emission-free energy source able to support other vessels with clean fuel? There are some 160 vessels worldwide with nuclear reactors, nearly all of them military ships or submarines, but will we ever see a nuclear superyacht?<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ulstein Verft AS (Company)">Ulstein</a> first unveiled its 149-metre Thor concept in 2022 together with the full-electric cruise ship concept Sif. With carbon emissions and alternative fuels in the spotlight, the disruptive project garnered considerable industry interest and last year the Norwegian group was invited to join a panel of class societies and flag states to discuss nuclear energy at the Superyacht Forum during <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="METSTRADE (Company)">METSTRADE</a> in Amsterdam. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/345476/image/large-86e6b7f074b0d025daacd8ef278312c7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/345476">“What was interesting was that each session was given 45 minutes before breaking for lunch, but ours had a record show of people and lasted one-and-a-half hours,” says Øyvind Gjerde Kamsvåg, Chief Designer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ulstein Verft AS (Company)">Ulstein International</a>. “Most people were sceptical about nuclear power at first, but many were converted by the end of the session.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/345475/image/large-fe152c3ab648f45f95a44efcbb814fa2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/345475">The clever thing about Thor from a superyacht perspective is that it is categorised as a Replenishment, Research and Rescue (3R) vessel and conceived as a floating power and charging station. Equipped with a Micro Modular Reactor (MMR) or a thorium-powered Molten Salt Reactor (MSR), it would be able to generate 20MWe of clean, safe electricity for recharging a new breed of full-electric vessels at sea, with the potential to also be plugged into the renewable energy grid.&nbsp;“Thor would be able to satisfy a variety of different needs in the market,” continues Kamsvåg. “So you can use it as a first responder, you can use it as a scientific research hub, you can use it as an energy replenishing unit. It can serve so many functions once we start to explore the nuclear energy infrastructure.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/345477/image/large-0429b7fc1a60397791907c4ab4370335.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/345477">The alternative to a mobile charging station like Thor is installing a nuclear reactor on board the yacht itself, which comes with other potential advantages. As the fuel is contained within the reactor there are no fuel tanks, combustion air intakes or exhaust stacks that take up valuable space. Besides being emission free, nuclear reactors require no regular maintenance and provide extremely long intervals of operation before refueling. The latest reactors on submarines, for example, are designed to last the lifetime of the ship, during which time they circumnavigate the globe many times. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/345478/image/large-14fd245191f94bb52f00df8512f04a23.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/345478">“Superyacht clients like the idea of Thor because the reactor is separate from the yacht itself,” says Kamsvåg. “But we’re starting to see micro reactors and associated systems that can be scaled to fit on bigger superyachts. That is still a bit further up the road, but I think both scenarios are equally interesting.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/345479/image/large-d6d867f4205068d87c224002e1e073ca.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/345479">Theory of relativity&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> considered the question with its Relativity concept back in 2012 and concluded that “technically speaking, a nuclear fission reactor design could be made, customised to fit the available space on a yacht and dimensioned to allow for all operating conditions.” Like <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ulstein Verft AS (Company)">Ulstein</a>, thorium was envisaged as fuel in a high-temperature, low-pressure molten salt reactor. The heat output would then be converted to mechanical power using high efficiency, closed-cycle Helium gas turbines to drive the generators. But the technology was not readily available and issues associated with insurance and port controls rendered the idea compelling but ultimately impractical. More recently, a 2023 joint study between the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> R&amp;D department and Delft University tackled the topic again.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/345484/image/large-79faf9b85628a8a8924851eb64797f28.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/345484">The study identified that a IV generation Micro Modular Reactor using a uranium, carbon and oxygen fuel kernel might be the best fit for the load profile of a superyacht. A fraction of the size of a conventional nuclear reactor, MMRs can be factory-assembled and transported as a unit for installation. Both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ulstein Verft AS (Company)">Ulstein</a> have looked into the volumetric requirements of installing such reactors on board and found they would occupy less space than alternative fuel systems. However, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> study underlined the massive weight implications of the lead and concrete shielding materials required. Depending on the size and power of the reactor, the whole installation could weigh over 2,300 tons, more than doubling the weight of an 80-metre yacht!<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/345480/image/large-6708471d22a0871e0106b1de58ddd049.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/345480">This is just one reason why <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> believes a more realistic role for maritime nuclear power would be to make green hydrogen or methanol either onshore, or close to shore, for use as carbon-free fuels. This view was backed up by Ronno Schouten, Design Manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>, at the Alternative Fuels conference during the 2024 Monaco Energy Boat Challenge:<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/345483/image/large-fce43549aacd84d60dd04bab4f6b42ee.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/345483">“Yes, a nuclear-powered yacht will be technically feasible sometime in the future, but why integrate an MMR with an average onboard load of about 10 percent, when you can put it to better use onshore making green fuel like methanol for multiple yachts at maximum power?”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/345481/image/large-613ba1e28b699b2098c84884a05656cc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/345481">High stakes&nbsp;Although technically possible, onboard nuclear power faces other hurdles. Public perception of the danger of radioactivity, heavily influenced by high-profile accidents like the Chernobyl and Fukushima disasters, is a major concern although sometimes overstated. The latest nuclear technology makes leakage or meltdown highly unlikely, but checks need to be put in place to prevent accidents due to grounding, impact, collision, machinery damage, fire, explosion, and other causes. Last but not least is the near total lack of maritime legislation, insurance policies and flag state rules covering nuclear reactors on yachts.“The regulatory bodies and flag states all agree that nuclear will play a role if we want to go into emission free or more sustainable shipping,” says Jose Jorge Garcia Agis, Managing Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ulstein Verft AS (Company)">Ulstein International</a>. "The main challenge today is that the international regulations for nuclear-powered ships are outdated and based on old nuclear technology. This makes it very difficult to implement them on modern vessels. Ship design is heavily influenced by regulations; we work within the rules. Without clear rules, we have to define our own framework and then seek approval, rather than designing around an existing framework."<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/345487/image/large-d4c783c0accbd70aef80541d535d2483.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/345487">The commercial shipping industry is aware of what is at stake. Last year, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/295" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fincantieri Yachts (Company)">Fincantieri</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1457" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="RINA (Company)">RINA</a> signed an agreement with newcleo to carry out a feasibility study for applications in shipping for the nuclear tech company’s lead-cooled, small modular reactors. In August <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyd's Register (Company)">Lloyd’s Register</a> announced a project together with Core Power – a leading developer of floating nuclear technology solutions – and A.P. Mølle - Maersk &nbsp;to assess the viability of a nuclear-powered container ship that could be deployed in European waters. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyd's Register (Company)">Lloyd’s Register</a> further launched a new report at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/224" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2024">Monaco Yacht Show</a> in September entitled Fuel for Thought: Nuclear for Yachts that highlights its potential as a clean, powerful and long-lasting energy source.&nbsp;“Nuclear energy offers the potential to be as transformational to shipping as the shift from wood to iron or from sail to steam,” says Engel-Jan de Boer, Global Yacht Segment Director for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyd's Register (Company)">Lloyd’s Register</a>. “Unlike alternative fuels that might serve as direct replacements for traditional oil-fired systems, nuclear power represents a fundamental shift that could redefine luxury yachting”. &nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/345486/image/large-1c295dae166e1f997955f4ab6a7705bb.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/345486">Do we have a choice?The first nuclear-powered merchant ship, NS Savannah, was launched way back in 1959 by the New York Shipbuilding Corporation in New Jersey, USA, as one of only four nuclear cargo ships ever built. A demonstration vessel designed to serve also as a passenger ship, she was appointed with 30 air-conditioned ensuite staterooms, dining facilities for 100 passengers, a lounge that could be converted into a movie theatre, a swimming pool, veranda and library. However, high operating costs, low commercial value, limited port access and public concerns about safety led to her being taken out of service in 1971.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/345485/image/large-2718607a22e7678dd1cb76030ebc511a.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/345485">Sixty-five years after the launch of NS Savannah, the situation is very different. Nuclear technology is far more advanced, the reactors are much smaller and safer, and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4531" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="International Maritime Organization (Company)">IMO</a> has doubled down on carbon-reduction ambitions by setting a net-zero emissions goal by 2050. Moreover, geopolitical tensions around the world are making the energy independence offered by the nuclear option an increasingly attractive proposition. In this scenario, another Norwegian research project, NuProShip (Nuclear Propulsion of Merchant Ships), is aiming to develop a commercially viable nuclear technology for ships that satisfies all stakeholders and requires no subsidies after the initial development process.&nbsp;Heading up the NuProShip project is Jan Emblemsvåg, professor of ocean operations and civil engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). While it may be true that the shipyard phase currently accounts for just one to three percent of a vessel’s carbon footprint, that will change with the advent of fossil-free fuels. Amidst the energy transition, shipyards are gradually switching on to the need to implement more comprehensive sustainability solutions in their operations, business practices and yard infrastructures.There have been some high-profile developments in recent months. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/295" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fincantieri Yachts (Company)">Fincantieri</a> has announced a plan to install solar panels across five of its sites in Italy, generating a total of 10 megawatts to reduce energy draw on the national grid by 11GWh annually. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Palumbo Superyachts (Company)">Palumbo</a> has installed solar panels at its Malta yard, a wind turbine at its Naples facility and aims to achieve full sustainability across its seven shipyards by 2030. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> in the Netherlands, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/681" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Marine (Company)">Monaco Marine</a> in France, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3255" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard (Company)">Gold Coast City Marina &amp; Shipyard</a>in Australia are all assessing eco solutions from rainwater collection to wastewater treatment. However, harvesting renewable energy or paying more attention to recycling is only a fraction of what’s involved in greening a shipyard.Case study: The new-build yard &nbsp;With a workforce of over 3,000 employees across five sites, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a> has a significant economic and industrial impact on the city of Plymouth in the UK. The company is taking its commitment to sustainability very seriously by re-assessing every facet of its operations with the aim of increasing efficiency and reducing costs, which makes for a compelling business case. Overseeing this sustainability drive is Laura Parry, who joined <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a> in 2020 as Environmental &amp; Compliance Manager. Since then she has seen her role grow exponentially.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310000/image/large-1527d40e4e81c2d2905f4c4ee4346cc8.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310000">“I started off as the sole person within the company with this focus, assisting the health &amp; safety department,” she says. “I now have an intern from the city’s university and two environmental sustainability business partners who work across all five sites.”That extra help is needed: the policies that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess</a> is investing in and that Parry is overseeing are extensive, and potentially transformative for the business. It starts with ISO compliance, in particular standards 9001 (quality), 14001 (environmental management system) and 45001 (health &amp; safety). Standard 14001, especially, is about continual improvement, which is monitored internally but also audited annually by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1452" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lloyd's Register (Company)">Lloyd’s Register</a>. Coupled to this has been an investment by KPS Capital Partners, the American private equity company that became the new owners of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a> in February 2023.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310002/image/large-67497365ffbc44949c7059c3b71c4ba4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310002">“The new &nbsp;shareholders are very keen on environmental sustainability and we have a good plan of action for 2024,” says Parry. “There is a clear focus on sustainability from the top, which really helps our cause.”In addition, a university PhD student is making a complete lifecycle assessment of one model line, literally deconstructing it to analyse every aspect of the construction from the nuts and bolts to energy waste.“Without that we could put our finger in the air and say we think our biggest impact is waste management, but the truth is we don’t know,” admits Parry. “What this LCA will do is point us in the right direction with qualitative and quantitative data. It’s already led us to tweak and change our operations.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/258136/image/large-1a5b771835acfb06005cd285755181e3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/258136">The end goal is to move the shipyard from a linear to a circular economy and address end-of-life issues, particularly as the yard builds in GRP, by working with its procurement team to go back to the roots of the supply chain.“That’s not only for our own good; it’s also supporting other people to be on that journey, because that’s how you inspire people, by taking them on the journey with you,” says Parry. “Working with your suppliers is really where it all starts.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310003/image/large-170fa1e30cbba074b8d52f3fb02f7dc3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310003">Managing infrastructure&nbsp;Tangibles that can be quickly addressed include reducing waste-to-landfill, shifting waste-to-energy partners from 50 kilometres away to a local plant, increasing recycling, sourcing eco-material alternatives and looking at how to reduce waste by using material off-cuts for other purposes. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a> runs a digital waste dashboard that allows Parry to monitor positive or negative change in waste management and reduction.&nbsp;“For any company, it’s about working in collaboration with different departments,” she advises. “I might have the technical expertise, but without the support from the rest of the business we would not have seen the progress made so far.”These studies have led to some unexpected changes in best practice. The yard uses Crestomer structural adhesive extensively, for example, but then has to handle the responsible disposal of the packaging. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/309998/image/large-708efe6fda18444b60cf35d6486c9292.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/309998">“When we looked into the disposal compliance, because it’s hazardous waste, we discovered that the liners weren’t being properly squeezed out, which meant a considerable amount of wasted product,” Parry points out. “So by improving compliance we actually made financial savings. Those savings for a large boatbuilder can easily equal tens of thousands of euros just through recovered product.”Similar gains can be made in other areas. The company has undertaken remedial works to remove air leaks, which will deliver significant annual cost savings, and completion of the transition to LED lighting in all the production areas is expected to deliver a six-figure saving.&nbsp;“We’re also looking at a centralised compressor plant at one of our biggest sites to improve running and efficiency,” adds Parry. “It’s quite an investment in infrastructure, but it improves efficiency and will mean we become smarter in how we operate. We’re also adding photovoltaics to the sheds, and biomass heating was commissioned in 2022.”Case study: The refit yard&nbsp;Operating as a refit shipyard presents its own set of challenges, because you’re not working on vessels from raw material to finished product, or at least not with the same degree of control over the process that a new-build yard has. However, refit offers other opportunities to reshape the sustainability landscape across the industry.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261593/image/large-9a3563c54f6a32b0b53c0e0fd713e509.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261593">“Shipyards can do two things – one is what you are doing as a business, and the other is what you’re implementing on the assets you are working on,” says Txema Rubio, Commercial Director at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/97" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 Barcelona (Company)">MB92</a>. “A new-build yard can choose the type of propulsion, the materials, et cetera. In refit it’s a completely different story, but we have an important role to play, because at the end of the day we’re receiving an asset and we’re being asked to improve it.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/97" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 Barcelona (Company)">MB92</a> was an early adopter of sustainability and has been proactive in sourcing solutions. For the yard element, installing solar panels on the shed roofs has been one aspect, but equally important is where the rest of their power comes from. Its Barcelona shipyard, for example, has an agreement with the energy provider that all its electricity comes from renewables, which ties in with new yard policies that all yachts in the yard must use shore power – running diesel generators is no longer allowed. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310004/image/large-9a69ef2fe6ee15eb59947cc683e97d8d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310004">Similarly, yachts can only be painted on hardstanding, not afloat. Hardstanding is a much higher cost per day than berthing and that means telling clients that if they want to have a paint job at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/97" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 Barcelona (Company)">MB92</a> they will have to pay at the hardstand rate, not the berthing rate.&nbsp;“We lost a lot of clients in the beginning, but now clients understand why we have that policy,” says Rubio. “It means the yard has much more control over everything, from water treatment to prevention of leaks and spills, and it ties in to other yard infrastructure and machinery investments that contribute to reducing the environmental impact of every aspect of the yard and its operations.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261590/image/large-47d097ce0549707640f987792763b9e0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261590">These measures include water treatment plants that treat everything, even rainwater, before it gets discharged, and Sea Bins that skim plastics and other debris from the harbour water before they can reach the open sea. When the new ship lift was built at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/547" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="MB92 La Ciotat (Company)">MB92 La Ciotat</a>, they received permission to use HVO in all the machinery, which means a 90 percent reduction in carbon emissions.&nbsp;When it comes to the business side, Rubio says there is a more fundamental driver than simply return on investment. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/310005/image/large-750953a2d3d77376b37db5ef5052f61c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/310005">“There’s no choice, we cannot not do it, so doing it quicker gives you an advantage and you are a leader,” he maintains. “Plus if we don’t take care of our playground, the sea, then we have nothing to sell to our clients. The amount of investment, the percentage of your revenue you apply to that, I think is different in each case. We’re investing a lot and we’re making business decisions because we truly believe it’s the future. And finally, as an industry, we need to get away from greenwashing.”Moreover, Laura Parry from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a> believes it is important to look outwards as well as working from within the company.“I think it’s essential to work with as many groups and organisations as we can, because at the end of the day I want to be transparent – and if I can make savings within our organisation, why wouldn’t I want to share that with other organisations?” she asks. “Environmental sustainability shouldn’t be competitive; it should be about sharing ideas and best practice.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261589/image/large-844516863426db0a2dbcb00315568607.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261589">Financial incentivesThere is another element of policy at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a> that delivers financial benefits and links to energy efficiency. The voluntary Climate Change Agreement (CCA) scheme, established in 2001 as part of the UK's overall commitment to reducing CO2, aims to make energy and carbon savings through energy efficiency targets whilst also helping maintain competitiveness by reducing energy costs in eligible industrial sectors.“Businesses pay a climate change levy, but there are potentially &nbsp;huge financial savings to be had by applying and committing to those agreements,” Parry explains.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/23326/image/large-5be28ad1b004ce8702a6c6018867d752.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/23326">There is a list of eligible activities that a company can review, and if a site represents 70 percent of that activity it can apply to for an agreement. In <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a>’ case, it was surface engineering due to the laying up of the hulls and decks. They surveyed the sites and determined the relevant facts and figures, which were signed off by the Surface Engineering Association and then the Environment Agency, and the result is a reduction in tax. The financial impact can be considerable – well into six figures for businesses the size of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a>.People powerLike at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1912" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Princess Yachts (Company)">Princess Yachts</a>, Txema Rubio believes it is important to have someone within the company who is focused solely on the sustainability aspect and can support all departments. “That’s a real game-changer,” he says, “because it helps to have small initiatives at every single level of the company.”It extends beyond the obvious measures like increasing recycling to more advanced strategies for a circular economy. The yard’s procurement department together with a sustainability coordinator is checking what the industry can offer in terms of new interior materials, and it is inviting sub-contractors to find and promote new ideas and facilitate conversations.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/309999/image/large-3e762ac0105ee46b8ea7b680367ff8ac.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/309999">It is also manifested in initiatives such as the group’s Refit for the Future service launched in April 2023, which aims to assist owners looking to reduce the environmental impacts of their yachts through the application of the latest tech to drive sustainability.&nbsp;“We explain to crews and owners more the concept of transition and that the sustainability path is not a one or a zero – there will never be the perfect final solution for an asset built 15 years ago,” Rubio says. “But that doesn’t mean you can’t improve things.”

My journey began in the early 1980s, when I started work in commercial construction, focusing on large-scale vessels. This transition is a natural progression for us, as we possess the necessary skills, expertise, and infrastructure to undertake this ambitious endeavour.What were the key factors that influenced&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7053" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri Navali Tureddi (Company)">Tureddi Group's</a>&nbsp;shift in direction?Andrea: There were two pivotal conditions that guided our decision. Firstly, we felt strongly that we had the necessary skills and expertise to embark on producing a line of yachts under our own brand. With our experience in producing high-quality hulls for renowned shipyards, we believed in our ability to deliver exceptional craftsmanship.Alessandro: Secondly, market conditions played a significant role in our decision. Currently, shipyards around the world especially in Italy are facing a full order book stretching until 2026/27. This presented us with the perfect opportunity to cater to discerning buyers who appreciate and seek out high quality yachts.We remain committed to continuing both sides of the business, producing hulls for other shipyards as well as our own brand. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/283590/image/large-08362fb55e4918081557456847f1fa92.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/283590">Could you provide an insight into Tureddi's production capabilities?&nbsp;Andrea: <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7053" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cantieri Navali Tureddi (Company)">Tureddi’s</a> production capabilities are driven by the expertise and experience of our highly skilled professionals who form the backbone of the yard. The dedication and familial bond within the shipyard plays a significant role in our success. Our workforce has been expanding, and we now have a network of around 100 collaborators/employees who contribute to our production.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/283584/image/large-78d88c85fe5f7f2f0d83696c65d17601.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/283584">Alessandro: In terms of our capacity, we specialise in building steel and aluminium full custom superyachts in the 30-60-metre range. Currently, we operate from three production sites, with two sites dedicated to hull construction and the third site soon to be available for the commencement of a potential new superyacht project. The facilities span over a total of 5,000 square-metres of covered and 2,000 metres of uncovered space, and the location provides direct access to the canal in Navicelli, facilitating the smooth movement of vessels towards the sea. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/283575/image/large-c09454d11ddc9ab379e9a7353515fcc3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/283575">Furthermore, we are in the process of establishing three additional sites, including another at Navicelli and two in Viareggio, which offer direct access to the sea. This decision aligns with our commitment to developing a direct network and maintaining close relationships with potential owners, rather than relying solely on brokerage houses. By engaging with clients in a more personal and direct manner, we can better understand their needs and deliver tailored solutions.This streamlined approach will allow us to be efficient and to consistently deliver exceptional results, all while maintaining a strong emphasis on quality and client satisfaction. We believe that by continuously refining and fine-tuning our business model, we can stay at the forefront of the industry and exceed the expectations of our clients.What is your future vision?Alessandro: We want to continue the successful trajectory of our ongoing expansion endeavours and are actively seeking further growth opportunities, particularly in the American and Middle Eastern markets. The Four Seasons Yacht will combine some of the best aspects of a cruise ship with those of a superyacht and will be able to accommodate up to 222 guests across 95 suites. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/243231/image/large-26ea809d57aebd5a317923b7b44415ef.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/243231">The suite accommodation will start at 54 square-metres of indoor and outdoor space, all with floor-to-ceiling windows. The top seven suites will also benefit from their own private plunge pools with a cost to build of $4.2 million per suite.The first Four Seasons Yacht will offer nearly 50 percent more living space per guest than currently available, offering ultimate privacy, flexibility and spaciousness in an all-suite nautical residential setting. Guests will have the opportunity to dine in the privacy of their own decks or in one of the yacht’s 10 restaurants, lounges or bars. The classic canoe-shaped aft will be home to an expansive pool deck, allowing for moments of leisure and relaxation. This area will also transform into an outdoor movie theatre or space for an array of private events.The Four Seasons Yacht&nbsp; will offer guests the opportunity to explore the world with the comfort of a Four Seasons team. Amongst her long list of attractive amenities are two helipads, storage for a large submarine, an impressive internal seawater pool, and a total of 2,700 square metres of interior living space. Constructed from steel and aluminium, the seven deck yacht can accommodate up to 24 guests in 12 staterooms, with up to 52 crew members.
