When it comes to marina infrastructure in China, much of the attention has focused on Hong Kong, with established sites such as <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3255" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard (Company)">Gold Coast Marina</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3227" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lantau Yacht Club (Company)">Lantau Yacht Club</a>, as well as newer developments like Skytopia and the Hung Hom waterfront project. However, with many of Hong Kong’s marinas operating at or near full capacity, attention is gradually shifting toward neighbouring Shenzhen as a viable and increasingly attractive alternative for yacht owners.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361573/image/large-8a1c37535ea41e5bff85d156422cdef8.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361573">As one of China’s most dynamic urban centres, Shenzhen has undergone rapid transformation since its designation as a Special Economic Zone in 1980. Today, it is home to more than 17 million people and stands as a leading hub for innovation, finance, and technology. The city hosts the headquarters of major tech firms including Tencent, DJI and Huawei, and its sustained economic growth has fuelled the rise of a sizable high-net-worth population. This concentration of wealth and industry has, in turn, generated strong domestic demand for luxury services, including yachting.SuperYacht Times features writer Enrico Chhibber recently visited <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8062" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shenzhen Bay Marina Club (Company)">Shenzhen Bay Marina Club</a> with Ronnie Wang of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7800" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Encounters Asia (Company)">Yachting Encounters Asia</a> to explore how the marina is positioning itself within the wider Greater Bay Area. During the visit, Chhibber toured the marina’s facilities and spoke with Managing Director Alex Liu about its evolution, the services it offers, its role in supporting the broader development of yachting infrastructure across the region, and the future plans set to enhance Shenzhen’s position as a yachting destination. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361568/image/large-5938a98e92935fb28335e1dfc5cc9904.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361568">The visit to the marina began with a 40-minute ferry ride from Hong Kong to Shenzhen, followed by a short drive from the terminal to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8062" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shenzhen Bay Marina Club (Company)">Shenzhen Bay Marina Club</a>. Upon arrival, we were welcomed and given a tour of the marina’s indoor facilities, which were immaculately presented. The interiors featured imported sandstone finishes and a range of amenities, including conference rooms for members and hotel-style accommodation for visiting yacht owners staying on site for several nights. After the tour, we sat down for coffee in the dining area with Alex Liu, Managing Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8062" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shenzhen Bay Marina Club (Company)">Shenzhen Bay Marina Club</a> and son of the marina’s owner. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361587/image/large-c4bcc951589946afcb9914c223193c19.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361587">Origins of the marinaLiu began by recounting the origins of the marina, which opened in 1994 as part of a broader government initiative to strengthen maritime infrastructure in Shenzhen. “We launched with a vision to create a luxurious and service-oriented yachting community, inspired by Shekou’s prestigious maritime traditions,” Liu explained. Of these, around 200 berths are occupied. “While we do have a strong local Chinese client base, we attract many international yacht owners from Europe, the Middle East, and the Americas,” Liu said. Liu noted that the overflow from Hong Kong presents a significant opportunity for Shenzhen, particularly as the region continues to expand its maritime infrastructure and service capabilities.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361583/image/large-c3ac293299eb44623d99e2b482290b2a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361583">Launched in 2017, the ‘Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macau Yacht Free Travel’ scheme allows Hong Kong-registered yachts to stay at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8062" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shenzhen Bay Marina Club (Company)">Shenzhen Bay Marina</a> for up to 183 days as tax-free visiting vessels, provided they operate within designated cruising areas in Guangdong waters. The scheme also permits Chinese-flagged yachts to travel to Hong Kong, with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/8062" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shenzhen Bay Marina Club (Company)">Shenzhen Bay Marina Club</a> remaining the only approved mainland port under the policy. Describing the initiative as a “game changer,” Liu emphasised its significance in shaping the marina’s role in the region. The marina has also become a sought-after venue for international fashion houses, with both LVMH and Kering Group holding exclusive events at the waterfront location.These events are also designed to engage the city’s growing base of high-net-worth individuals, many of whom have accumulated their wealth through Shenzhen’s booming tech and innovation sectors. A recent article on the topic, citing data from the <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/market-reports/asia-pacific-superyacht-market-report-2024" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">Asia-Pacific Market Report</a>, noted an increase in the number of superyachts over 30-metres frequenting the region. Additionally, the report shows that over the past two years, Mainland China has ranked among the top five most visited countries in the Asia-Pacific region for yachts over 30-metres.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321983/image/large-f43f2ef402d620226737a57419a28018.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321983">The <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/213" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit - 2024- 1st Edition">Asia-Pacific Superyacht Summit</a> in Hong Kong provided an ideal opportunity for <a href="https://www.superyachttimes.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="">SuperYacht Times</a>’ Features Writer Enrico Chhibber to visit Sanya city in Hainan, China. Accompanied by his friend Ronnie Wang, Managing Partner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7800" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachting Encounters Asia (Company)">Yachting Encounters Asia</a>, who facilitated the visit, they explored the marinas in Sanya and its surrounding areas, learning about how marina development and planning have evolved and changed direction over time.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321952/image/large-8e2b46fb8d2323897d82300b5f282b2d.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321952"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7802" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Visun Royal Yacht Club (Company)">Visun Marina</a>:After arriving at Sanya Airport, we were joined by Mr Zuo Zhiyong, the Secretary General of the Sanya Cruises and Yachts Association, for a tour of Visun Marina. Our first stop was <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7802" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Visun Royal Yacht Club (Company)">Visun Marina</a>, one of the main marinas in Sanya city in terms of size. There, we met Mr. Wang Meng, the marketing manager of the marina. In our conversation about <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7802" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Visun Royal Yacht Club (Company)">Visun Marina</a>'s background, he revealed that the marina has around 450 berths, 420 of which are currently occupied by yachts. The largest yacht that can dock there is 50-metres in length, and the largest yacht currently in the marina is a 46-metre Jinlong superyacht.As the conversation progressed, Mr. Wang explained that the development of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7802" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Visun Royal Yacht Club (Company)">Visun Marina</a> began with a series of incremental phases starting in 2005. The fourth phase was recently completed. According to Mr. Wang, the next phase involves acquiring nearby land to further expand the marina.During the tour, we noticed a refit centre named Visun Tuscany Yachting at the marina. Intrigued by the potential Italian connection, we discovered that Navigo, a company based in Tuscany, had assisted in the development of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7802" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Visun Royal Yacht Club (Company)">Visun Marina</a> and had also been involved in organising the Hainan Rendezvous event—a sailing regatta designed to promote the area's maritime infrastructure. Later, in a conversation with Pietro Angelini, Navigo’s Managing Director, he revealed that their share of the marina had been sold back to the owner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7802" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Visun Royal Yacht Club (Company)">Visun Marina</a> in 2016.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321951/image/large-2b31ca5794012953f352ad9db1ef6f4a.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321951">Mr. Wang then kindly invited us onboard a sailing yacht to tour the marina and experience local cruising. Having just missed the peak travel season in Sanya, which runs from October to April, we were informed that during the high season in the winter, around 600 to 700 vessels are cruising on charters in Sanya Gang Bay next door. In the low season, this number drops to around 150 vessels. The average size of these vessels ranges from 12 to 24-metres. Despite it being the low season, the marina appeared quite busy and as the tour progressed it appeared that the main operating brands were <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2561" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heysea Yachts (Company)">Heysea</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> and other active local yacht builders.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321953/image/large-616fb0749a654f05affaba12ab7d992e.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321953">The discussion then gravitated towards the dynamics of the local charter market, a recent development in the region. Mr. Wang explained that on 8 December 2019, regional legislation was implemented to officially allow commercial charter operations, leading to a significant boom in the local charter market. Before 2019, charter operations were limited to private experiences.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321949/image/large-664e9f81c9736111ad379e06ae5be3be.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321949">Sanya International Yachting Center:As the tour progressed, we passed by the Sanya International Yachting Centre, which hosts Boating Sanya, the city’s only boat show, first held in April 2023. The latest edition of the boat show is scheduled for December 5th to 8th, 2024. This marina, along with the large yacht trade and exhibition centre located directly behind it, has been developed by the Sanya Central Business District (SYCBD).<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321950/image/large-08dab0f272675156d01dc4a2477aaefe.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321950"> This local government body is involved in developing the yachting industry and related services in Sanya, aiming to develop the city as the yachting capital of the Asia-Pacific region. The facility has around 258 berths and moorings, and can accommodate yachts up to 40-metres in length.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321941/image/large-b42ae243ff5f096fe3377e21e2e0b70d.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321941"> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7803" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Serenity Sanya Marina (Company)">Sanya Serenity Marina</a>:The following day, we visited <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7803" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Serenity Sanya Marina (Company)">Sanya Serenity Marina</a>, located on the Luhuitou Peninsula, adjacent to the city's central area. Unlike the more urban previous marina, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7803" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Serenity Sanya Marina (Company)">Serenity Marina</a> is nestled near a golf club and surrounded by tropical greenery, luxury resorts, and apartments.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321943/image/large-41bdc4b2db4393071a328b6bdfab421d.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321943">This marina provides 325 full-service in-water berths, accommodating yachts up to 60-metres in length with drafts ranging from 3.5 to 7-metres. In February 2018, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7803" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Serenity Sanya Marina (Company)">Sanya Serenity Marina</a> received the International Platinum Gold Anchors accreditation from the Marina Industries Association (MIA). Hainan Yaqing International <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7804" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Clearwater Bay Marina (Company)">Clearwater Bay Marina</a> offers a distinct contrast with its serene surroundings, and it is a part of a resort complex stretching a beautiful sandy beach of 12 km long. Compared to Sanya, this area is more private, attracting owners who prefer a quieter environment. Upon our arrival, we met Ms. Wen, the Sales Manager at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7804" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Clearwater Bay Marina (Company)">Clearwater Bay Marina</a>, who pointed out that construction of the marina began in 2011 and it was officially put into use in 2015. Additionally, in 2021, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7804" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Clearwater Bay Marina (Company)">Clearwater Bay Marina</a> was officially approved as Class One and Two port for both international and domestic vessels.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321954/image/large-e9067625eee0b91f3377720a48c4ef33.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321954">Walking through the marina, it was evident that the superyachts docked here were larger compared to those at the previous marinas, including a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/112" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Custom Line (Company)">Custom Line</a> 112, several <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut</a> 95 models, a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2561" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heysea Yachts (Company)">Heysea</a> 112, and a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/112" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Custom Line (Company)">Custom Line</a> Navetta 30. The tour then continued into the marina's clubhouse, where the discussion further progressed.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321946/image/large-ada5b849d47bbe4ab366f11ca8d91cc8.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321946">The marina’s management team pointed out that in 2023, Yaqing International, the holding company of Hainan Yaqing <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7804" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Clearwater Bay Marina (Company)">Clearwater Bay Marina</a>, initiated a comprehensive upgrade of the marina’s shore facilities and water equipment with a total investment of about 800 million RMB (€104 million).<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321944/image/large-1d970e113b7e56abca2c0ccab3da0272.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321944">The owner of the marina, an avid yachtsman, has pursued a strategy of expanding the marina's infrastructure. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7804" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Clearwater Bay Marina (Company)">Clearwater Bay Marina</a> is strategically located in the middle of the golden route from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau to Southeast Asia. The owner envisions this area as an ideal primary docking and stopping place for yachts travelling to Xisha and Southeast Asia. Plans include the development of a port centre and an immigration centre to address bureaucratic issues and ensure seamless visits.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321947/image/large-af58a146053d8ba994d4f4add957e273.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321947">This upgrade is expected to be fully completed by October 2024. Once finished, the marina will feature a multifunctional complex integrating business, leisure, entertainment, shopping, catering, and accommodation. The upgraded marina will feature extensive facilities, including 46,000 square metres of supporting venues, 20,000 square metres of dry warehouses for boat repairs, and 360,000 square metres of harbour waters. Upon completion of the later development phases, it will offer a total of 873 berths that meet international standards, including 32 berths specifically designed for superyachts.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/321948/image/large-256cc6232c72f0f44497c2797b57c481.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/321948">As our trip visiting the marinas came to a close, it became evident that a local robust yachting market and ecosystem in Sanya exists to support it. Each marina caters to different yachting segments. While it is a hotspot for local smaller yachts, there is a noticeable lack of large superyachts. This may change with the further development of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7804" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Clearwater Bay Marina (Company)">Clearwater Bay Marina</a>, which could attract larger vessels.

Did you initially start with interior design and then expand your expertise to include exterior design?In the early stages of my career I was primarily focused on interior design and my expansion into exterior design happened somewhat by chance. In 1999, I was skilled at creating virtual renderings. It was during this time that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5678" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Luciano Di Pilla Design (Company)">Di Pilla</a> expressed the need for someone to develop renderings that represent his ideas. As our collaboration evolved, he noticed that I had an eye for colours and materials, and suggested I venture into interior design on my own. Driven by my interest, I started creating interior renderings independently. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5678" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Luciano Di Pilla Design (Company)">Di Pilla</a> then started to encourage me to expand in exterior design renderings, even though he himself was not involved in that aspect. The outcome of this inaugural project can make or break a career. A successful launch, indicating the creation of a high-quality product, paves the way for career progression. A less favourable outcome can pose significant challenges.In the case of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4663" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="VYD Studio (Company)">VYD Studio</a>, we have substantially developed and grown since 2017, following our successful first launch, which subsequently has led to our involvement in a total of 12 projects.&nbsp;Could you please share the origins of your collaboration with&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/752" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mengi Yay Yachts (Company)">Mengi Yay</a>&nbsp;and any upcoming projects you have in partnership with them?&nbsp;Our collaboration with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/752" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mengi Yay Yachts (Company)">Mengi Yay</a> was facilitated by a mutual acquaintance, Lorenzo Cappugi. Two 53-metre units are currently under construction, with scheduled delivery in 2025.To transform the design of the luxury explorer XP series into reality, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4663" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="VYD Studio (Company)">VYD</a> starts from the inside, perfecting and optimising the general arrangement (GA) to ensure a balanced and enjoyable yacht. Once the interior spaces are interconnected and well-conceptualised, we extend our design process to the exterior, creating a shell that not only contains but also enhances the interior innovations. The result is a vessel that combines the sturdiness and safety of an explorer yacht with the modernity and style of the Virtus Line, offering a "Luxury Explorer" experience.&nbsp;Key design features of this under 500 GT project include an owner's cabin on the upper deck with access to a private open deck with a pool, a permanent helideck, a spacious beach club with a pool directly connected to the sea through unfolding sea terraces, guest cabins on the main deck for optimised crew space on the lower deck, exterior areas that can be either open or enclosed through windshield glass and a substantial elevator connecting all decks.My most recent design with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/752" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mengi Yay Yachts (Company)">Mengi Yay</a>, involves the construction of the 34.5-metre explorer yacht named Atlante Classic, with a scheduled delivery in 2025.Could you provide insights into recent emerging trends within the yacht industry?In the 1990s, many yacht owners had a limited understanding of the technical nuances, such as the differences between composite, steel, and aluminium as well as distinctions between displacement and semi-displacement hulls. However, the landscape has evolved significantly. Today, yacht owners tend to be more knowledgeable and proactive in their enquiries, thanks to factors like globalisation and easy access to information. Moreover, seasoned owners with four, five, or six vessels under their belts, now have a clearer vision of what they seek in the market. As a designer, my role now often extends beyond aesthetics. I frequently find myself engaged in discussions covering a range of topics, from generator engines and stabilisers to hull forms. While my primary focus is on design, I also delve into engineering discussions to address the intricate demands of modern yacht owners.The shift in preferences has been notable with speed no longer the exclusive focus. Instead, there is a growing emphasis on comfort, insulation, reduced noise, and the efficient utilisation of interior space.If you could purchase your own yacht or advise a client, is there one design feature you feel has the most impact on a luxurious experience onboard?<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/293785/image/large-e7f435a76ce10f5c1257686c9863647d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/293785">The ideal onboard experience lies in the versatility of spaces. Specifically, areas like the sky lounge and saloon should be designed with a sense of adaptability. For instance, these spaces should be convertible so that, in the spring, you can enclose and control the internal climate, while in the summer, they can be fully open to the elements. This means that you can choose to keep them open during the day and, if needed, close them at night. The idea is to create flexibility in these spaces, avoiding rigidity.&nbsp;Moreover, I also appreciate the concept of neutral fixed furniture, walls, ceilings, and floors. This neutrality allows for the ease of updating and modernising the interior over the years by making changes to specific elements. There has been a boom in “demand for anything between 15-metres through to 45-metres, and around 500 yachts have been sold in Hong Kong in the last two years,” Eric Noyel, Founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5504" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Asia Marine (Company)">Asia Marine</a> &amp; Managing Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Fraser (Company)">Fraser</a> Asia, told SYT. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/223285/image/large-af2e2abb128e9080583b34b18780bff1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/223285">While the appetite has predominantly been satisfied by European builds, local yacht builders have also been kept extremely busy. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kingship Yacht (Company)">Kingship</a>, for one, currently has multiple projects underway, Managing Director, Roger Liang confirmed. “We are currently building a 45-metre motor yacht designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4364" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Horacio Bozzo Design (Company)">Horico Bozzo of Axis studio</a>, and have just delivered a 24-metre catamaran to a buyer who’ll navigate around one of the largest lakes in Southern China.” <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/282" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Kingship Yacht (Company)">Kingship</a> built six steel displacement yachts, that are full class and adhere to MCA standards, in the last 10 years. The yard also delivered three high-speed catamaran to clients in Southern China.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219565/image/large-22ced79efd4b0eddc1bc720fe5be70a9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219565">Across the Taiwan Strait, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1394" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocean Alexander (Company)">Ocean Alexander</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/119" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Horizon Yachts (Company)">Horizon Yachts</a> are churning out yachts with great tenacity, securing owners for each one. Last year <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1394" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocean Alexander (Company)">Ocean Alexander</a> delivered 13 yachts in the above 24-metre category and have a further 12 penned in to be launched this year. Whereas eight yachts built by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/119" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Horizon Yachts (Company)">Horizon</a> made their first splash last year, and the Taiwanese builder expects to put another 15 in the water before this year’s through. The bulk of these yachts aren’t destined for Asia though, “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/119" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Horizon Yachts (Company)">Horizon Yachts</a>’ main market is Australia, the States, and Europe” Suzy Rayment, Executive Director of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5448" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Asia Pacific Superyachts (Company)">Asia-Pacific Superyacht Association</a>, explained. The lower number of Asian sales compared to other regions was confirmed after a quick call to the European office of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/119" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Horizon Yachts (Company)">Horizon Yachts</a>. The same is true for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1394" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Ocean Alexander (Company)">Ocean Alexander</a>.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/214509/image/large-fc13dc58f4b69787fce9940344e59784.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/214509"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/111186/image/large-210aa4300e3261200ed50c1e362c0d7d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/111186">“Shipyards in Taiwan and Mainland China have been exporting yachts around the world for many years and there is now a growing market in mainland China for locally built yachts,” Mike Simpson, Founder &amp; CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1011" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Simpson Marine (Company)">Simpson Marine</a>, commented. “Local builders are learning fast from their more established western counterparts and the quality is improving, but Asian buyers have come to expect cutting edge design, innovation and build quality – and throughout Asia they generally prefer to buy yachts from more established western shipyards. The ‘Designer Label’ is as important for yacht buyers as it is for buyers of cars, watches or handbags.”&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/177088/image/large-42d416153cf207aa10a7e8215e7f1371.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/177088"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4788" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jinlong Mega Yacht (Company)">Jinlong Mega Yacht</a> is one such shipyard that is developing quickly. The yacht builder is owned by the conglomerate that recently acquired <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/434" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Balk Shipyard (Company)">Balk Shipyard</a>, Zhongying Int’l Holding Group Ltd. The Dutch shipyard will soon be working closely with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4788" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jinlong Mega Yacht (Company)">Jinlong Mega Yachts</a>, as the Chinese shipyard rolls out its expansion plans. Daan Balk confirmed this when the initial announcement was made, stating that his team will support the training activities at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4788" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jinlong Mega Yacht (Company)">Jinlong Mega Yacht</a>.European or American-built yachts are more than just a status symbol for many though. Quality is one thing, but &nbsp;“there also isn’t the same level of aftercare with Chinese-built boats,” Rayment said. So while these yachts might be cheaper, they still come with a price: a lower guarantee that clients know and expect from superyacht manufacturers. This may not be the case for long though; it seems we’re at a pivotal turning point.&nbsp;The forthcoming developments at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/4788" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jinlong Mega Yacht (Company)">Jinlong Mega Yachts</a>, for one, but also with headway being made at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2561" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heysea Yachts (Company)">Heysea Yachts</a>. “<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2561" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Heysea Yachts (Company)">Heysea</a> was established in 2007 and is currently the leading shipbuilder in mainland China,” Godfrey Zwygart, Managing Director at Marevisio Co. Limited, said. &nbsp;“They have a whole range of boats up to 43 metres, and their quality has been improving considerably in recent years – they are a serious competitor to western shipyards.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/100071/image/large-0bf6bfc76339c8dfc6a3125a232f0ff0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/100071"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/95551/image/large-7b41d18fc1e4817669080c0f3bf96c0b.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/95551">The other big player in China is <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3780" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pride Mega Yachts (Company)">Pride Mega Yachts</a>, located in the Yantai Shandong province. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/3780" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pride Mega Yachts (Company)">Pride</a> is the yard that handled the construction of one of the largest Chinese-built superyachts: the 88.5-metre motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5634" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Illusion Plus88.5m (290'4&quot;)Pride Mega Yachts2018">Illusion Plus</a>. Currently all three shipyards are predominantly geared for export, they all have scope to expand their facilities if local demand grows – which it could.“China is completely closed off from Hong Kong at the moment, but this could change as Hong Kong is now part of the Greater Bay Area,” Reyment said. “The yachting infrastructure is waiting to happen in China – it’s just not there yet. Hong Kong is a great role model in that respect.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/95547/image/large-36050a0922739ff2d4925c9f3755d27e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/95547">“Hong Kong has been doing well with superyacht sales these last few years and has had a fair bit of success with the 40-45-metre category,” Joe Yuen, Chief Representative, Hong Kong and Macao at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/159" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Burgess (Company)">Burgess</a>, told SYT. “It’s been a slightly different story in the mainland and the market for imported superyachts is a lot slower. There is a demand for locally built superyachts, production boats and smaller yachts in the region, but not for those imported.”Yuen continued, “A lot of local owners want superyachts, but because of local restrictions there is a reduced appetite for larger pleasure vessels. We see a lot of smaller Chinese-built yachts going out fishing and day cruising around Southern China, but larger yachts aren’t a common sight.”Tax and flagging regulations are two issues. While there may be much lower tax imposed if an owner wants to fly a Chinese flag, it comes with restrictions. “Local yachts with a Chinese flag have limited access to domestic waters and need to apply for special permits to go abroad, so boats willing to sail globally would have to be registered as commercial,” Zwygart explained. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208973/image/large-f6e2669d736b89cd112f3eb0d442eaed.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208973"><img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/208974/image/large-b4a17d98ee52c159c2a131cb2bb91edd.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/208974">This explains the strong focus on export. It also provided an opportunity for other Asian shipyards to tap into the market. South Korean builder <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/2478" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="GHI Yachts (Company)">GHI Super Yachts</a> "Phoenix Model Yachts", for one, supplies superyachts to its Chinese clients with an availability of flags and without an export tax. The largest yacht currently in-build at its facilities is the 39.6-metre motor yacht Legacy 135.Amidst heavy restrictions, there’s a lot of potentials. The market is maturing but the infrastructure needs developing and legislation needs lifting. There's also an issue with limited berthing available. Nonetheless, Roger Liang reports a growing number of “yachts on Hainan Island,” while this is positive the numbers “will take time to catch up” with the numbers of other affluent countries. If legislation is passed, there could be an upsurge – but, really, it’s difficult to tell.&nbsp;

With a growing appetite for superyachts in China and Hong Kong, can we expect to see an increased activity in shipbuilding?

The 35.2-metre superyacht Asteria 116 is currently in-build and is for sale.
