Like all Greeks, Nikolas Pateras has an inherent love for the sea, but his passion for seafaring goes beyond that of even his most water loving countrymen. Born into a seventh generation shipping family, Nikolas has been raised on the water, surrounded by yachts and vessels of all sizes. At the age of only 33 he acquired his first yacht, the 31.5-metre classic <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dama di Cuori31.5m (103'4&quot;)Benetti SpA1970">Moongoddess</a>, which sparked a lifetime's journey of yacht ownership that has seen him own eight yachts over the past twenty seven years. By the late 1800s, the familial business had grown from small wooden vessels to clipper ships and by 1902 they purchased the first steamship.A legacy of perseverance and determination, the family business has been through good years and tough times, losing all their ships in both World Wars. Nikolas first joined the company Pateras Brother Ltd, in 1986 at the age of 23, and since joining has managed 150 vessels. In 2015 he moved into the container ship market with Contships Management Inc. While cargo ships are his business, it is in yachts that Nikolas and his family get the most pleasure. “My father and uncle had boats from the early 1970s, and my uncle built a trawler with accommodation in the bow. I used to spend all my time onboard, working as crew at the age of 14-15 during the summer holidays learning the ropes. The lady I acquired her from even gave me the Hermes cigar humidor that was originally onboard, which I still have to this day. ”She was the first Adamas, the Greek word for Diamond”. His daughter Anastasia was born in 1996, the year he acquired <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/757" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dama di Cuori31.5m (103'4&quot;)Benetti SpA1970">Moongoddess</a> but not long after Anastasia’s birth came a second child, and around the same time many of Nikolas’ friends were also building families and wanting to spend time onboard, so it was time to scale up.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/104517/image/large-37f5a4e07f2627b50397023f38d0d22f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/104517">Walking through Rotterdam airport one morning in 1998, Nikolas picked up an industry magazine and flicking through the pages, found a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/159" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Burgess (Company)">Burgess</a> advert for Azzam, which later became his <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2201" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Itoto61.0m (200'2&quot;)Dauphin Yachts1987">Adamas II</a> on the market for $16 million. The 59-metre yacht had an interesting history having been owned and built by the Emir of Abu Dhabi as an almost exact copy of the 61-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> superyacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1435" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanoo61.0m (200'2&quot;)Feadship1979">Sanoo</a>. “She was an interesting size and had nice <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>-esque lines, so I called the broker and offered $8 million. He said that it was never going to happen, and that they had two American clients offering $14. But not long after I got a call back because the Americans would only take the yacht if she was delivered to the Med, and the owner was refusing to send the yacht through the Suez Canal, so whoever took delivery would have to do so in Abu Dhabi. I sent a few guys down there, and they looked her over, said she was in great condition so we put the offer back on the table. The Emir accepted and even left all the furnishings and cutlery onboard, as well as two <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/363" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Riva S.p.A. It was my dream that the children would grow up sailing as I had, but while they loved being onboard, neither took to sailing particularly. Then one day in 2010 my captain called me and said that there was a man sitting on the dock staring at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3971" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Gloria38.4m (125'12&quot;)Jongert Yachts1986">Gloria</a>. I sent one of the crew to approach the guy, who turned out to be Peter De Savary, previously owner of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/209" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Pendennis Shipyard Ltd (Company)">Pendennis</a>. In 2017 while cruising <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2134" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Möbius38.0m (124'8&quot;)Cantieri di Pisa1996">Adamas III</a> in Corfu, Nikolas saw the 32.72-metre, black-hulled <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally B32.72m (107'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd1998">Wally B</a> for the first time. A year after his first inquiry, Nikolas received a call from Mr Rothschild, who was about to launch the 73.2-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/1596" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Planet Nine73.2m (240'2&quot;)Admiral2018">Planet Nine</a>, and was looking to sell <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally B32.72m (107'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd1998">Wally B</a>. A deal was made and eventually Nikolas took ownership of the yacht, which at the time was in bad shape having been mostly unused for over a year. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/42647/image/large-94351e4d5ae88a2de2e992836f00685e.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/42647">“We brought the boat to Piraeus, did a huge amount of work on her, including painting her hull white replacing the sails and my children and wife fell in love with her. I even tried to sell her once or twice, but my wife threatened to shoot me if I sell the boat – in fact she is a wonderful yacht and we enjoy her a huge amount. Low maintenance, lovely lines that were futuristic at the time, but are now completely contemporary, and very seaworthy, we all enjoy cruising the Greek islands with her.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20360/image/large-6dc60a5d7e95e64bcd393c4c5e4da2d6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20360">Nikolas’ most recent acquisition in 2023 is the 65.25-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adamas V65.25m (214'1&quot;)Cantieri Navali Nicolini Srl1987">Adamas V</a>, previously Yaakun, originally built for &nbsp;the Emir of Qatar as&nbsp;Al Menwar. An unusual yacht in regards to her configuration with all guest staterooms on the sundeck and a huge engine room and crew quarters Nikolas explains that part of his reason for this acquisition was that she was, at the time, the only reasonably priced 60 plus metre yacht on the market. She has since undergone a significant refit of over €5 million to bring her up to European standards under the supervision of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/76" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Studio Vafiadis (Company)">Giorgio Vafiadis</a>. “A very solid, large fast displacement yacht able to cruise at 21 knots, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adamas V65.25m (214'1&quot;)Cantieri Navali Nicolini Srl1987">Adamas V</a> had an unusual appeal to me and I knew after inspection that she had the potential to become a fantastic superyacht.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/20361/image/large-88e6ae6154a3cc3b615ae7dc234a4011.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/20361">While Nikolas enjoyed the yacht over the past summer, his eyes are once again set on the horizon and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adamas V65.25m (214'1&quot;)Cantieri Navali Nicolini Srl1987">Adamas V</a> may be soon placed in the market, freshly refitted and looking better than ever. With <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/539" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Wally B32.72m (107'4&quot;)Pendennis Shipyard Ltd1998">Wally B</a> the family favourite, Nikolas would like to build a 30-metre displacement yacht to cruise between the Greek islands and entertain friends, as he said, “Adamas VI will be the boat they bury me in!”&nbsp;Despite this assurance, it's hard to believe that after an extraordinary repertoire of eight superyachts behind him, Nikolas will be one to throw in the towel, so who knows how many Adamas we may see in the future. Herbert Dahm, the founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/444" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dahm International Spain S.L. (Company)">Dahm International</a> and one of the leading forces behind the sectors largest indoor trade show <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/215" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Boot Düsseldorf - 2024">boot Düsseldorf</a>, has died at the age of 94. A formidable figure, Dahm founded a number of companies within the industry, eventually announcing his retirement from the sector in 2013 during the annual boot Düsseldorf. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/140725/image/large-996066721ad8640681073adc49cfa305.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/140725">Dahm began his career selling electronics and sailing in his spare time, developing the first electronic billing machine in Germany and then a special financial software. He later co-founded Module, a company that makes, among other products, high quality aluminium profiles which are used within exhibition stands and yacht shows globally.He was, for 35 years, the exclusive marketing and sales agent for the Dutch shipyard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/104" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jongert Yachts (Company)">Jongert</a>, building five <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/104" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jongert Yachts (Company)">Jongert</a> yachts for himself in the meantime, including True Love and the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/104" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jongert Yachts (Company)">Jongert</a> 2200S <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5843" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Inspiration22.07m (72'5&quot;)Jongert Yachts1985">Inspiration</a>. A passionate yachtsman, he also owned the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> Classic 115 My Way, now <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/553" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Friendship35.05m (114'12&quot;)Benetti SpA2000">Friendship</a>, launched in 2000, and had a close relationship with Paolo Vitelli. He toured the main industry events aboard My Way, visiting 12 yacht shows with the boat during his ownership of her, with his small <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/104" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jongert Yachts (Company)">Jongert</a> True Love stored on the sundeck.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/261278/image/large-6ecc0dd1fedc5917880bf97e3aec645d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/261278">During an interview with SuperYacht Times back in 2008, to the question; 'In our industry, what should change in the future?', Dahm responded "In the future we should cut down on fuel consumption. The climate change is a serious matter, and not only cars should go hybrid. Also in the future (in the longer term) yachts should use less fuel instead of the hundreds of litres an hour to sail from Antibes to Saint Tropez. I think we will also see more and more displacement yachts in the future.” Demonstrating his foresight and deep understanding, that enabled him to predict issues of the future, many years before the sustainability question became the foremost topic within the sector.&nbsp;His brokerage house <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/444" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Dahm International Spain S.L. Captain Harold Onel stands as a seasoned veteran in the superyacht industry. His passion for yachting dates back to his childhood. His professional journey, marked by an ascent from engineer to captain, is replete with a wealth of experiences and tales. These adventures range from deep sea fishing off the coast of West Africa on the 28.74-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/104" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Jongert Yachts (Company)">Jongert</a> sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Blue Fascination 28.74m (94'3&quot;)Jongert Yachts1988">Blue Fascination</a> to navigating the inland canals of the Netherlands. After several encounters, Harold, a tall and well-built figure, agreed to engage in a more detailed conversation over a meal. Over a simple dish of pasta with broccoli, Harold opened up about his life and career, offering insights into the qualities that define a superyacht captain.Delving into his past, Harold reminisced about his early fascination with speed. He fondly recalled, “In my late teens, I owned a small 4.5-metre motorboat and vividly remember racing against a much larger motor yacht. That yacht, equipped with twin 300 horsepower engines, was exceptionally fast for her time”. Unlike his peers, Harold often found himself immersed in yachting magazines, absorbing every detail about the power of various yacht engines and frequently dreaming of one day piloting these swift vessels himself.While pursuing his studies in nautical engineering, Harold’s fascination with superyacht engineering intensified. He would often reach out to shipyards, eager to witness yacht launches firsthand. A standout memory for him was attending the launches of the 65.15-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/589" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Cedar Sea II65.15m (213'9&quot;)Feadship1986">Cedar Sea II</a> and the 49.47-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2094" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Highlander49.47m (162'4&quot;)Feadship1986">Highlander</a>, originally owned by Malcolm Forbes, in 1986.Harold then made a pivotal decision to leave his studies just before his final exams, drawn by an opportunity to work as an engineer on a 1958 23-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/11" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="De Vries Lentsch (Company)">De Vries Lentsch</a> motor yacht, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/7815" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sealord23.02m (75'6&quot;)De Vries Lentsch1958">Sealord</a>. But my time on <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/12661" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Blue Fascination 28.74m (94'3&quot;)Jongert Yachts1988">Blue Fascination</a> was crucial for honing my navigation skills. While the captain focused on the sails, I took the helm for navigation”.Harold’s transition to becoming a captain was catalysed by an opportunity from John Ter Haak, a <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> distributor in the Netherlands, who visited Harold's parents' shop. Ter Haak offered Harold the chance to captain his 12-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> motor yacht on a voyage from Amsterdam to Port Zeelander. Navigating through inland canals and rivers, this journey marked Harold's inaugural experience as a captain. Following this, Harold's involvement with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/354" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunseeker (Company)">Sunseeker</a> deepened, frequently navigating their yachts from the UK to the Netherlands as a cost-effective alternative to ferry transport.In discussing his inaugural experience as a superyacht captain, Harold shared the story of how his first superyacht captaincy was on the first <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9962" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="My Issue 27.25m (89'5&quot;)Moonen Yachts2001">My Issue&nbsp;</a>. The owner presented him with a straightforward offer, entrusting him with the command of the vessel. As the owner transitioned to a larger yacht, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/262" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Beluga34.7m (113'10&quot;)Moonen Yachts2006">Beluga</a>, Harold continued in his role as captain, navigating the Mediterranean, conducting charter operations. &nbsp;Beyond these duties, Harold also participated in delivery voyages, notably transporting the 38.16-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a>-built <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/147" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Northlander38.16m (125'2&quot;)Moonen Yachts2009">Northlander</a> from the Netherlands to the Mediterranean, as well as the 41.78-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a> yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/3651" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Serenity41.78m (137'1&quot;)Moonen Yachts2013">Serenity</a> (ex Sofia). Furthermore, in 2022, Harold captained the 36.3-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a> motor yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/9236" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Botti36.3m (119'1&quot;)Moonen Yachts2022">Botti</a> on a transatlantic voyage, successfully navigating her to West Palm Beach, Florida. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/100448/image/large-73db08e160c9d0121e19d8d6036c0879.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/100448">When I inquired about his most memorable charter experience, Harold's eyes gleamed as he recounted an encounter with a renowned American actor, whose entourage proved to be extremely challenging. He noticed a sense of unrest among the crew, stirred by the guests' behaviour. Harold then emphasised that a critical skill for a superyacht captain is mastering the art of navigating such complex dynamics. “The key is maintaining composure,” he asserted. “Regardless of the situation's intensity, a captain and their crew must always present a calm façade. It's imperative for the clients, who are paying for the charter, to remain blissfully unaware of any underlying tensions”.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/53340/image/large-3cc3a943c9e68b3ae044a3a1f4551aa3.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/53340">Harold then underscored the critical importance of maintaining a positive atmosphere onboard, highlighting crew cohesion as fundamental. He would champion inclusive practices to achieve this, advocating for the equitable distribution of tips. “Involving everyone is essential, from the captain to junior positions,” he stated. “Fair allocation of gratuities is paramount. A higher rank should not automatically entail a larger share of tips”.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/47713/image/large-a1d03157ff18ab19343af6755e4783e7.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/47713">Furthermore, Harold reflected on the evolving role of a superyacht captain, which now extends beyond merely navigating a yacht from point A to point B. In today's context, a captain's responsibilities cover a broader spectrum, including meticulous bookkeeping and managing high-value luxury assets, highlighting the multifaceted nature of modern superyacht captaincy.Currently, Harold dedicates his time to conducting sea trials for both <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/130" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Moonen Yachts (Company)">Moonen</a>. However, he retains his passion for sailing and intends to return to. Interestingly, he is now actively working on obtaining the necessary certifications to navigate inland waters. “I will sail again,” he maintains, signalling his ongoing commitment to the water.
