The market for new sailing superyachts is a small one compared to the motor yacht market, but it has seen some very interesting developments as of late. Our Head of Intelligence Ralph Dazert takes a dive into the data about this market segment.New sales changing tack?Sales of new sailing yachts in 2024 defied the downward trend witnessed in the overall newbuild and used yacht market over 30-metres. They were up by three units compared to 2023, to 15 units, which is also the average of the last ten years. So still not a staggering number as we saw 21 sales in the boom year of 2021 and in 2018 as well, but behind these 15 sales of 2024 are some important developments. Also the contrast between the upward movement of new sailing yacht sales versus the downward in the sales of their used counterparts is interesting to note. It is important to note that this upswing in sales is restricted to the 30-40-metre segment as the high-end custom segment above that is a very small niche with a rhythm of its own.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/361698/image/large-5ef9e3d53d6dd6a3cb1f1c75895e9719.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/361698">In September 2024, Italian superyacht powerhouse <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> announced the completion of its acquisition process of the Finnish sailing yacht yard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Nautor Swan</a>, which <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> bought from the Italian fashion mogul Leonardo Ferragamo. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Swan</a> sold three yachts in the summer of 2024, including hulls 2 and 3 of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Swan</a> 108 model and hull 5 of the 98 model. Most of these deals were likely already concluded before the completion of the takeover by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a>. These orders came on top of the sale of the second hull of the 128 model earlier in 2024. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Swan</a> had no new yacht sales over 30 metres in 2023.In addition, we saw the other main Finnish super sailing yacht builder, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/327" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Baltic Yachts (Company)">Baltic Yachts</a>, replenish its orderbook over 30 metres, signing its first sailing catamaran with the 32.9-metre Zeteo project and a 37.08-metre custom sloop for a repeat client. Again, the company had sold nothing new over 30 metres in 2023.Also the South African yard <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/151" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Southern Wind (Company)">Southern Wind</a> saw its sales go up from just one new yacht over 30 metres during 2023 to three in 2024, while Polish catamaran specialists <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1158" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sunreef Yachts (Company)">Sunreef</a> sold two new sailing cats over 30 metres during 2024, one more than in 2023.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/329084/image/large-e8887e061655820284115b9dafe1ee1a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/329084">A gust of wind or a steady breeze?So was 2024 the start of a prolonged upswing in new sailing yacht sales or just a temporary glitch? Market experts acknowledge that there was a bit of a “boom” in the summer of 2024, particularly owing to a scarcity of available build slots, with next available delivery options as far out as 2026 or 2027. However, the lack of availability of attractive used yachts also played its part, as the available inventory of used yachts had been cleared out during the post-Covid sales boom between 2021 and 2023. This pushed several clients who had been considering new-builds for some years to finally make their move, but also several first time buyers were won over. It remains to be seen if the same sales success can be achieved in 2025, as first indications are that more owners are looking to list their used sailing yacht for sale, although we do not yet see that in the number of sailing yachts newly listed for sale (28 as of late May 2025 versus 29 for the same period of 2024). Meanwhile, available build slots remain scarce. On the upside, pricing has become more stable since about late 2023 as the inflationary peak during the Covid years subsided and supply chains have become more stable. Still, it remains a challenge for shipyards to accurately price a newbuild delivering in late 2007 or early 2028.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/338185/image/large-93dcacfdc46b9a6959d379c800417346.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/338185">Some fresh blood in terms of super sailing yacht ownership is coming from clients who order sailing catamarans. During 2024, no less than five of these were sold, up from two each during 2023 and 2022. Yachts attending the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta 2025

We take a look at the yachts attending the 2025 edition of the highly anticipated Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta.

The fourth edition of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7139" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="International Maxi Association (IMA) (Company)">International Maxi Association</a>’s Maxi European Championship began on 16 May with the start of its offshore component, the Regata dei Tre Golfi; the Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia's offshore race which is celebrating its 70th edition.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/360633/image/large-37a2b5bacbb7da072327c25c67ab8f9f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/360633">Organised by the Circolo del Remo e della Vela Italia (CRVI) and taking place until 22 May, the 156-nautical mile offshore race defied expectations of light Mediterranean airs, with brisk north-easterlies propelling the fleet from Naples to Ponza, past Capri and on to the finish line off the Sorrento Peninsula.A dramatic spinnaker start in 15 knots of breeze set the tone on Friday afternoon, with Chris Flowers and David M. Leuschen’s 30.48-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5656" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Galateia30.48m (100'0&quot;)Green Marine2015">Galateia</a> seizing an early lead. Owner Hap Fauth and his seasoned team, the defending <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/7139" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="International Maxi Association (IMA) (Company)">IMA</a> Maxi European champions, delivered an exceptional performance.&nbsp;After losing ground south of Capri, Bella Mente found the breeze first off the Amalfi coast and powered ahead to finish third on the water, just over six minutes behind <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/14556" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Magic Carpet e30.48m (100'0&quot;)Persico Marine2025">Magic Carpet e</a>. With more than two decades of experience across multiple sectors of the yachting industry – including stints in China, a leadership role at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Nautor Swan</a> and most recently as Chief Commercial Officer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> – Fanizza brings with him a holistic view of the market and a sharp instinct for what drives owners today.“I was presented with many opportunities,” he reflects. “But this one was different. Next Yacht Group has an exceptional legacy – fifty years of history between <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/536" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maiora (Company)">Maiora</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AB Yachts (Company)">AB Yachts</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/284" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CBI Navi (Company)">CBI Navi</a>. But most importantly, it now has an owner with a bold, clear vision and the resources to match.”It was the opportunity to shape this vision at both a commercial and strategic level that convinced Fanizza to step into the role. “Becoming CEO here means I can really influence the DNA of the company – not just sales, but brand identity, product direction and customer experience. That’s rare and incredibly exciting.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/348292/image/large-65606189ec08b62c3808157c040f7621.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/348292">What are your immediate priorities on joining the company?“The product. During our initial discussions, and with my previous knowledge of the brand, I knew that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AB Yachts (Company)">AB Yachts</a> had a full – albeit niche – range, but <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/536" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maiora (Company)">Maiora</a> had just two models. Our first actions have been to clear the remaining stock, which we have done and to develop and launch a new range. As you know, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/536" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maiora (Company)">Maiora</a> unveiled the M|36 last month, with the Exuma 36 at the end of last year, alongside the new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AB Yachts (Company)">AB Yachts</a> AB95, marking the next generation for the two brands. The plan is to roll out up to four for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/536" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maiora (Company)">Maiora</a> and two for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AB Yachts (Company)">AB</a> ahead of the summer.” &nbsp;At the same time, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AB Yachts (Company)">AB Yachts</a> will see its offering expanded, including different propulsion systems and configurations to match regional demands. “The current <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AB Yachts (Company)">AB</a> range is like a hypercar – high performance, rare and exhilarating. There’s nothing else quite like it on the market.”Rather than chasing volume, Fanizza is focused on bespoke builds and owner-centric flexibility. “We don’t want to become a 100-yachts-per-year shipyard. That would compromise what makes us special. Do you plan to approach innovation differently? “Yes – completely differently. We’re starting with how people use yachts, not how they look. Too often, designs are made in isolation from real-life usage. I’ve spent a lot of time onboard with owners, observing how they live on their yachts. What we’re working on now breaks that paradigm. We’re calling top-tier designers, but giving them a new brief: don’t start with a profile – start with the experience. When the time comes, I’ll show you what I mean.”He teases that the new product lines will challenge conventional layout logic. “I can’t reveal everything yet, but we’re working with top-tier designers under a very different brief. When we present our next project, it will be clear we’re breaking with tradition.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/335646/image/large-b5adbd0030bc02af4eb2d8b62a929b04.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/335646">What are you doing to change how owners interact with the brand?“Today, owners expect much more. We’re creating a customer experience department focused entirely on personalisation. From the moment they land in Italy, everything needs to feel exceptional. We’re developing CRM tools to capture those details and ensure consistency across every touchpoint. And every client is different – you can’t treat all owners the same. Even the sales process needs to be adapted to their personality and culture.”The acquisition of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a> Viareggio facility in June 2024 also plays a major role in this evolution, with the company situated at the heart of the Italian yachting sector; “the Fifth Avenue of yachting” as Fanizza refers to it. The company is currently in the stage of renovating the facilities, both on the client facing side and for the production, “This facility gives us not just space, but presence,” he explains. “It allows for structured production, better logistics and a world-class experience for visiting clients. The impression this place makes in the first seven seconds of a visit? Should we expect to see an uptick in production?“We want to grow – but with purpose. The aim is to deliver a smaller number of yachts, with higher quality and more flexibility. This allows us to maintain close relationships with our clients and build exactly what they want.”Fanizza’s vision extends beyond the yacht itself. “Luxury today is about personalisation and service. You walk into a luxury boutique and they know your name, your coffee preference, your dog’s name. That’s the level we aim to offer at every touchpoint.” He stresses that this is not an attainable goal when building hundreds of yachts per year, another motivation factor when it comes to the production line. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/335648/image/large-2ce0f6f90bd039e1a97df0b9d530afc4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/335648">Let’s talk about the commercial side. What markets are you focusing on?“We’re targeting three key regions – the Americas, Europe and the Middle East. Each has its own culture and will be developing separate strategies for each. Until now, the group didn’t have a proper international sales network. That’s a huge opportunity for us – especially since we’re not chasing high volumes. We only need a small number of sales to hit our targets, so we can focus on doing it right.”Another major part of the strategy has involved the team and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6468" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Next Yacht Group (Company)">Next Yacht Group</a> has announced some solid talent acquisition in recent months, such as Roy Capasso, the new head of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AB Yachts (Company)">AB Yachts</a> sales. “We’ve already brought in new talent and we’re working hard on internal communication, training and team culture. We’ve got a clear strategy: fix the product range, clarify brand messaging, elevate customer experience and expand commercially. And thanks to the team, we’re making huge strides on all fronts already.”&nbsp;Fanizza has also come into this role in a challenging period for the global economy, but it is clear that he feels <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6468" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Next Yacht Group (Company)">Next Yacht Group</a>’s size and focus will enable it to ride the wave of upcoming challenges. “The situation is unpredictable – especially with political changes – but it affects segments differently. That said, we’re prepared to adapt quickly. It’s about listening to owners, designing around real experience and delivering something they didn’t even know they needed – until they try it. That’s our goal.”

A mechanical engineering graduate from the Polytechnic University of Turin, he began his career with Iveco in the automotive industry before transitioning into yachting through an early position with <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/358" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut Yachts (Company)">Azimut Yachts</a>. Three years later, he returned to the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6046" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Azimut-Benetti Group (Company)">Azimut Benetti Group</a>, taking up the role of Chief Commercial Officer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti Yachts</a>. Based on the consolidated results as of 31 December 2024 and the progression of order intake during the year, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> has provided its guidance for 2025. This guidance reflects the performance levels reached in 2024 and accounts for the full-year consolidation of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Nautor Swan</a>, anticipated to influence revenue growth and margins.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/320979/image/large-649a94dae16898ab9df849136057ab5a.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/320979"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> forecasts net revenues from new yachts to reach between €960 million and €1,020 million, marking a growth of approximately six percent compared to €930.4 million achieved in 2024. The EBITDA margin for 2025 is expected to remain relatively stable, between 18.5 percent and 19 percent, compared to the 19 percent margin achieved in 2024.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/374" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sanlorenzo (Company)">Sanlorenzo</a> anticipates EBIT in the range of €139 million to €149 million for 2025, reflecting a growth of around three percent from €139.3 million in 2024. The company plans to maintain a steady investment level, forecasting between €48 million and €50 million, slightly below the €49.3 million invested during 2024.
