A new interim report from the UK’s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has provided a first look at the final moments of the 55.9-metre sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/39" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bayesian55.9m (183'5&quot;)Perini Navi2008">Bayesian</a>. The yacht capsized and sank in the early hours of 19 August 2024 off the coast of Porticello, Italy, resulting in the death of six guests and one crew member.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/48449/image/large-74e90245e827970b7f3fc617d166068d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/48449">According to the report, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/39" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bayesian55.9m (183'5&quot;)Perini Navi2008">Bayesian</a> had been anchored at Cefalù on the evening of 18 August with 12 guests and 10 crew onboard. The wind was light and the sea calm, with thunderstorms forecast, but not yet active. Overnight watchkeeping was in place, and the skipper gave instructions to be woken if wind speeds exceeded 20 knots, or if the yacht began dragging anchor.By 03:00 on 19 August, conditions remained benign with winds around eight knots, but lightning could be seen approaching. At 03:55, the deckhand on duty recorded a video of the advancing storm and noted wind speeds had risen to 30 knots, with the yacht beginning to drag anchor and list to starboard. The situation escalated rapidly.Just after 04:00, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/39" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bayesian55.9m (183'5&quot;)Perini Navi2008">Bayesian</a> and the nearby sailing yacht <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2259" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Sir Robert Baden Powell42.0m (137'10&quot;)Edgar André1957">Sir Robert Baden Powell</a> were both observed dragging anchor in worsening weather. The chief engineer started the yacht’s systems in preparation for manoeuvring, but before the crew could stabilise the situation, disaster struck.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/360177/image/large-c0cbd5b930f2ae17bf99d981e54ef248.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/360177">Bayesian yacht general arrangement“At 04:06, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/39" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bayesian55.9m (183'5&quot;)Perini Navi2008">Bayesian</a> violently heeled over to 90° to starboard, taking less than 15 seconds to do so,” the MAIB report states. “People, furniture and loose items fell across the deck. The generators shut down immediately and battery-supplied emergency lighting came on.”Guests and crew were thrown about the vessel. One deckhand was flung into the sea from the flying bridge. Within seconds, water entered through the starboard side and flooded the internal spaces. Despite heroic efforts by the crew to evacuate guests, including a baby, Bayesian continued to roll and eventually sank stern-first in approximately 50 metres of water.The crew managed to launch one liferaft and gather survivors. At 04:34, a red parachute flare was fired, eventually spotted by Sir Robert Baden Powell, whose tender recovered the survivors at 04:53.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/360180/image/large-3675c08b9028cbee0bcf4afb302ca6dd.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/360180">Radar images, showing passage of rain across the Bay of Palermo on 19 August 2024Weather conditions during the incidentThe weather that struck <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/39" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bayesian55.9m (183'5&quot;)Perini Navi2008">Bayesian</a> was described by the MAIB as not a typical thunderstorm. The Met Office, commissioned by the MAIB to study the meteorological conditions, concluded that a mesocyclonic storm with supercell characteristics had passed over the anchorage.“There was sufficient wind shear and convective available potential energy (CAPE) in the atmosphere to support the development of a supercell,” the Met Office noted. “Associated near-surface winds were likely to have exceeded 100 miles per hour (87 knots).”Radar and CCTV footage corroborated this, capturing a sudden squall front with lightning, poor visibility and violent wind gusts that arrived with little warning.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/39" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bayesian55.9m (183'5&quot;)Perini Navi2008">Bayesian</a>, at anchor with her centreboard raised and no sails deployed, was effectively in what is known as a ‘motoring condition’. In this configuration, her stability characteristics were drastically different from those presented in the approved Stability Information Booklet (SIB), which only included data for sailing conditions with the centreboard lowered.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/360179/image/large-b626e6b2f5fc9b28ba07f06a8024e100.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/360179">Derived wind heel data in assumed loss condition A commissioned study by the University of Southampton’s Wolfson Unit concluded that, in this motoring state, the angle of vanishing stability, which is the point that a yacht could not recover, was just 70.6°.Furthermore, the tall rig of the yacht, with a 72-metre mast, was responsible for 50 percent of the total wind heeling moment. The wind’s effect was worsened by the aerodynamic profile of the rig and its interactions.Critically, the study determined that when the wind was on the beam, a gust exceeding 63.4 knots was sufficient to capsize the vessel in her motoring condition. The Met Office findings suggest that the squall likely exceeded this threshold.“These vulnerabilities were not identified in the stability information book carried onboard. Consequently, they were unknown to either the owner or the crew of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/39" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bayesian55.9m (183'5&quot;)Perini Navi2008">Bayesian</a>,” the MAIB report states.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/292882/image/large-fb56b565e913e437c983206b4e0452d2.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/292882">The aftermath Despite the extreme conditions and rapid capsize, the report highlights that several crew members risked their lives to guide guests through flooded interiors and onto the decks and later into the water and liferaft.&nbsp;The chief engineer launched the EPIRB and flares were used effectively to attract attention. Basic first aid, flotation improvisation and mustering were all carried out in the dark sea as the survivors waited for rescue.“The skipper organised the abandonment from the flying bridge and instructed the guests and crew present there to swim clear of the mast and boom as the vessel was sinking,” the report recounts.Ultimately, seven people died in the accident, six guests and the yacht’s chef. Their bodies were later recovered by Italian authorities.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/60882/image/large-7837abda3b1f575a9dfce39ad08f224c.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/60882">Ongoing InvestigationThe MAIB emphasises that the findings presented remain preliminary. The wreck of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/39" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Bayesian55.9m (183'5&quot;)Perini Navi2008">Bayesian</a> has not yet been accessed by investigators due to a concurrent criminal inquiry by the Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office in Sicily. Once recovered, further analysis will focus on the actual loading condition, damage points, centreboard position, escape routes and life-saving equipment.“Until the investigative work is complete and the final report published, the contents of this interim report should be taken as indicative of the circumstances of the accident,” the MAIB cautions.As the investigation into the sinking continues, SuperYacht Times will provide further updates as new information becomes available. Project Metamorphosis, one of two 72-metre sister ships in-build at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">The Italian Sea Group</a>’s superyacht facility in Tuscany, is the first superyacht designed inside and out by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/558" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Armani/Casa (Company)">Giorgio Armani</a>. We visited the yard to catch up with the project leaders as the yacht prepares for her technical launch in April.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/191275/image/large-967f6db1fa63591ac112767b3d80b7de.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/191275">The idea of inviting <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/558" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Armani/Casa (Company)">Giorgio Armani</a> to create a custom design for the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/570" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Admiral (Company)">Admiral</a> brand came to Giovanni Costantino, CEO of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">The Italian Sea Group (TISG)</a>, when he was walking past the Emporio Armani store, a vast building that occupies a whole block in Milan’s city centre. Armani was no stranger to <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">TISG</a> having twice refitted his own yacht, 65-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/585" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Main65.0m (213'3&quot;)Codecasa S.p.A.2008">Main</a>, at the group’s <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/194" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="NCA Refit (Company)">NCA Refit</a>facility. It took another six months for the two men to meet in person, but it didn’t take long for the famous fashion designer to take up the challenge.&nbsp;Working to a heavily revised concept platform, the collaboration required constant back-and-forth between Armani’s creative team and the shipyard’s engineers. Armani would sketch ideas, which were then transformed into detailed blueprints by the shipyard’s engineering team, who made adjustments for practicality while staying true to the original design intent. The dynamic ensured that the 2,070GT superyacht would embody the designer’s signature style that blends discreet aesthetics with functional luxury, but also meet the required performance and technical parameters. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/244" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="IYC (Company)">IYC</a>'s global managing partner Michel Chryssicopoulos quickly found a buyer for what became Project Metamorphosis and her sister ship, Project Visionary, sold a few months later.&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355528/image/large-8a4b93215ae955bd3c6e3ff8ebdd3974.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355528">“The challenge was to craft a bold visual statement without relying on unnecessary ornamentation,” says Costantino. “The yacht had to be practical to operate, but also a piece of modern design that conveys timeless beauty."<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355529/image/large-b643b1d774300160ee340d3b049fcd1d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355529">Heart of GlassArmani’s minimalistic aesthetic makes ample use of glass, both externally and internally, &nbsp;with full-height panoramic windows on multiple decks. In fact, there are 310 square metres of external glass windows supplied by Sedak GmbH amounting to 15.5 tonnes in weight (in addition to 230 square metres and 4.5 tonnes of decorative interior glass). The windows on the main deck and bridge deck are also cantilevered outboard – these glass panes are not only massive, they also had to be able to withstand extreme weather conditions at sea without compromising the overall aesthetic.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355530/image/large-db369a0e0d47bfa6a727a9e75a6da96d.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355530">“One of the first things we did was a feasibility study and FEM analysis to make sure the structure could take the stresses the yacht would be subjected to during her life,“ says project manager Davide Santagostino. “This analysis had to take into account not only the weight of the glass, but also the stresses caused by water movement and the external forces in high wind-load conditions. Further engineering was required with regard to weight distribution and stability, and we had to find creative ways to place internal structural pillars without disrupting the open-plan layout.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/312192/image/large-a079f18cc169d0cb84f162aa0ec17172.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/312192">The cantilevered glass further provides for an angled skylight above the main window pane in the guest cabins and bathrooms on main deck, which noticeably increases the amount of natural light entering the interiors. The sky lounge on the bridge deck, designed as an versatile cinema area for year-round use in summer and winter, has electrically operated floor-to-ceiling glass panes on three sides. The panes measuring up to 1.8 metres in diameter can be stacked in the open position to provide a plein air space in warmer weather or a more enclosed, sheltered environment when cruising colder climes. Forward of the very spacious wheelhouse is a deep Portuguese bridge that can be used as a relaxation area for the crew. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355526/image/large-0256e54a228047749d1b844444d87f7a.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355526">Going the DistanceIn the spring of 2024 Project Metamorphosis found a new owner in a sale brokered by Darrell Hall of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1317" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Yachtzoo (Company)">Yachtzoo</a>. The change of ownership, just three months before the projected launch, presented further challenges for both the shipyard and the new owner’s team.“When I came on board, we were already at a stage where we realised there would be several adjustments necessary to meet the new owner’s requirements for personal use and with a view to charter," says Captain David Pott, who joined the project shortly after the resale. "Sustainability was not a prime motivator for the owner, but he was keen to integrate eco-friendly measures into the design as much as possible. He wanted a yacht that was able to go the distance – both literally and figuratively – and do so responsibly in full compliance with environmental regulations.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355533/image/large-341ae86dd47ae434d5d75d1fcf1b1a95.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355533">The owner's desire to explore high latitudes – the Northwest Passage is just one item on a planned multi-year circumnavigation – meant uprating the yacht to Polar Class 1C certification, the lowest ice classification based on first-year ice in the Baltic Sea and Arctic Ocean. Although the hull was built with an ice belt of 12mm steel plating to withstand some ice conditions, the former owner had not opted to pursue formal certification. The shipyard team got to work to make the modifications required to meet the requirements. Amongst other measures, this involved upgrading the rudderpost, pintles, steering gear and propellers, installing freeze-protection valves, making new stability calculations that take into account ice accretion, and addressing environmental protection requirements.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355523/image/large-fca67b5ef0751f76a062767500463ad7.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355523">The latter led to an owner’s request for enhancements to the yacht’s SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system by increasing the urea storage capacity. Injected as a water-based solution, the urea undergoes hydrolysis to produce ammonia, which reacts with NOx in the catalytic elements, effectively converting the harmful pollutants into harmless water vapor and nitrogen gas. Under Tier III diesel emissions regulations, in theory a vessel is required to carry only enough urea to run the SCR within a NOx Emission Control Area (ECA), but the owner wanted to use the system regardless of where his yacht is in the world – a prescient decision given that the list of ECAs will expand to include the Mediterranean as of May of this year. Besides neutralising NOx emissions, the SCR system also reduces exhaust noise and helps trap soot particles so they don’t find their way onto the deck, into the swimming pool and into the water around the yacht.“This was a major modification as we had to rework the tankage to include more urea storage, which impacted the yacht’s fuel capacity,” says Andrea Bigagli, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">TISG</a> Corporate Strategic Director. “In the end we were able to add more urea tankage without compromising the yacht’s cruising range of 6,000 nautical miles.”“We took the view that emissions regulations are getting stricter all the time, so why not try to reduce as much as possible our environmental impact from the outset?” adds chief engineer Sam Needham. “We asked the shipyard to investigate the possibility of having the SCR units running all the time and they were happy to do that, which is a big improvement from our side. Basically, the yacht will run out of fuel before it runs out of urea.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355531/image/large-278f6ff9f27edee7ce605f5f5ef9e8a4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355531">Future ProofIn line with the owner's desire for a tech-savvy and future-proofed yacht, the AV/IT systems underwent substantial upgrades. Working alongside AV/IT integrator Pibiesse, four Starlink antennas were added to the spec and cabling was augmented to ensure high throughput, redundancy, and future scalability for data-heavy applications like live video feeds, conferencing, and multimedia entertainment.&nbsp;“Given the rapid advance of high-bandwidth systems, this upgrade was designed to future-proof the yacht’s AV/IT capacity in years to come,” says Bigagli. “The idea is that as new tech emerges, it can be seamlessly integrated into the existing infrastructure without requiring a complete system overhaul.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355536/image/large-f2ca65aa498b52f2bb9742375ddbad61.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355536">Another important upgrade came in the form of an integrated bridge system from Furuno. This high-end addition improves the yacht’s navigation and operational capabilities, but also extends the vessel's usability in far-flung and possibly uncharted locations. The new bridge equipment includes FLIR thermal cameras and a WASSP multibeam sonar for mapping the seabed in high-resolution 3D. Using a tender in advance of the mothership, the system’s wide-angle sonar transducer maps the seafloor to find the safest passage and anchorage. The yacht also features telescopic wing stations with floors that pop up flush with the deck when extended, and a pantographic mechanism for the console controls inside the bulwarks.Other modifications include the addition of an ice bath next to the hottub on the sundeck, stacked storage for four jet skis in the forward tender garage with their own lifting gear, and a much bigger transom hatch that hinges down into a recess in the swim platform for flush access to the beach club. A unique feature and testament to the high level of detailing is the design of the handrails. Curved to follow the shape of the bulwarks, each stanchion is slightly different and the rails themselves, although capped with teak on the inside, present a polished stainless-steel profile on the outside to complement the crisp exterior styling. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/312648/image/large-0aaba726a90db74276874e072ae95030.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/312648">Customisation and CollaborationProject Metamorphosis is due for delivery in June and is expected to be a showstopper at the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Event/271" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Monaco Yacht Show - 2025">Monaco Yacht Show</a> in September. The late change of ownership and subsequent customisation requests inevitably meant delays, but enthusiastic collaboration between the owner’s team and the shipyard has been key to ensuring a successful result as the project enters the home straight.&nbsp;“We’ve been able to tweak a few things, but we could see right from the start that the shipyard had put together a solid package and the foundations for a strong vessel were already there,” says chief engineer Sam Needham, who reviewed the design and specifications before the resale. “Now it’s just a question of supporting the shipyard as much as we can to help them get across the finish line.”-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355534/image/large-b088dcaf6076bd870356fa7cb6deb74f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355534">Digital twinsShortly after the yacht changed hands, the owner’s team brought in Paul Shersby of Film360 Ltd to create a complete ‘digital twin’ of the project during construction using a Matterport LiDAR camera to capture spaces in high-resolution 3D. Working at night when the yacht was empty and progressing from tank deck to top deck, at the time of going to print Shersby had scanned the entire yacht four times (a complete 3D picture takes 500 scans or more) at intervals of six to eight weeks. While the system has been used to provide navigable interiors of finished yachts and residences for commercial purposes, the technology also allows the owner’s team to remotely track the construction as it progresses.&nbsp;“It’s been a really useful tool that I think will be picked up by others,” says Captain Todd. “For example, we can see all the cable and piping runs, where wi-fi routers are located, the black and grey water routes – basically everything below the deckheads or behind the walls before they’re covered up. It means if there’s a leak or other issues later on, we have a better idea of where the problem might be without having to take the interior to pieces.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/355527/image/large-20cef72894db9111d27266d505e3308f.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/355527"><a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">The Italian Sea Group</a>Owner of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/511" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tecnomar (Company)">Tecnomar</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/570" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Admiral (Company)">Admiral</a>, Picchiotti, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a>, and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/511" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tecnomar (Company)">Tecnomar</a> for Lamborghini brands, the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">TISG</a> headquarters in Marina di Carrara has two of the largest private dry docks in the Mediterranean: a 200-metre long basin and a second 147-metre dock inaugurated in 2021. There is second <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">TISG</a> facility in Viareggio and a third one in La Spezia for a combined area of more than 244,000 square metres, 18 production sheds, over 1,500m of berthing, a 3,300-ton floating barge, and a keel pit in La Spezia used by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/194" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="NCA Refit (Company)">NCA Refit</a> that manages the group’s maintenance and refit services. In addition, the group operates two leased facilities in Antalya and Yalova, Turkey, for the production of its steel hulls and aluninium superstructures. It also has its own furniture manufacturing company, Celi Srl.<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/5565" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="The Italian Sea Group (Company)">TISG</a> was listed on the Italian stock exchange in 2021. Excluding the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/511" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Tecnomar (Company)">Tecnomar</a> for Lamborghini 63, at the beginning of 2025 it reported 22 active new-build projects across its portfolio of brands for a total length of 1,356 metres. The Italian Job: Building the 72-metre Armani-designed Metamorphosis at Admiral

With more than two decades of experience across multiple sectors of the yachting industry – including stints in China, a leadership role at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/313" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Nautor Swan (Company)">Nautor Swan</a> and most recently as Chief Commercial Officer at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/212" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Benetti SpA (Company)">Benetti</a> – Fanizza brings with him a holistic view of the market and a sharp instinct for what drives owners today.“I was presented with many opportunities,” he reflects. “But this one was different. Next Yacht Group has an exceptional legacy – fifty years of history between <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/536" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maiora (Company)">Maiora</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AB Yachts (Company)">AB Yachts</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/284" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="CBI Navi (Company)">CBI Navi</a>. But most importantly, it now has an owner with a bold, clear vision and the resources to match.”It was the opportunity to shape this vision at both a commercial and strategic level that convinced Fanizza to step into the role. “Becoming CEO here means I can really influence the DNA of the company – not just sales, but brand identity, product direction and customer experience. That’s rare and incredibly exciting.” <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/348292/image/large-65606189ec08b62c3808157c040f7621.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/348292">What are your immediate priorities on joining the company?“The product. During our initial discussions, and with my previous knowledge of the brand, I knew that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AB Yachts (Company)">AB Yachts</a> had a full – albeit niche – range, but <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/536" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maiora (Company)">Maiora</a> had just two models. Our first actions have been to clear the remaining stock, which we have done and to develop and launch a new range. As you know, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/536" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maiora (Company)">Maiora</a> unveiled the M|36 last month, with the Exuma 36 at the end of last year, alongside the new <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AB Yachts (Company)">AB Yachts</a> AB95, marking the next generation for the two brands. The plan is to roll out up to four for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/536" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Maiora (Company)">Maiora</a> and two for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AB Yachts (Company)">AB</a> ahead of the summer.” &nbsp;At the same time, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AB Yachts (Company)">AB Yachts</a> will see its offering expanded, including different propulsion systems and configurations to match regional demands. “The current <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AB Yachts (Company)">AB</a> range is like a hypercar – high performance, rare and exhilarating. There’s nothing else quite like it on the market.”Rather than chasing volume, Fanizza is focused on bespoke builds and owner-centric flexibility. “We don’t want to become a 100-yachts-per-year shipyard. That would compromise what makes us special. Do you plan to approach innovation differently? “Yes – completely differently. We’re starting with how people use yachts, not how they look. Too often, designs are made in isolation from real-life usage. I’ve spent a lot of time onboard with owners, observing how they live on their yachts. What we’re working on now breaks that paradigm. We’re calling top-tier designers, but giving them a new brief: don’t start with a profile – start with the experience. When the time comes, I’ll show you what I mean.”He teases that the new product lines will challenge conventional layout logic. “I can’t reveal everything yet, but we’re working with top-tier designers under a very different brief. When we present our next project, it will be clear we’re breaking with tradition.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/335646/image/large-b5adbd0030bc02af4eb2d8b62a929b04.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/335646">What are you doing to change how owners interact with the brand?“Today, owners expect much more. We’re creating a customer experience department focused entirely on personalisation. From the moment they land in Italy, everything needs to feel exceptional. We’re developing CRM tools to capture those details and ensure consistency across every touchpoint. And every client is different – you can’t treat all owners the same. Even the sales process needs to be adapted to their personality and culture.”The acquisition of the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a> Viareggio facility in June 2024 also plays a major role in this evolution, with the company situated at the heart of the Italian yachting sector; “the Fifth Avenue of yachting” as Fanizza refers to it. The company is currently in the stage of renovating the facilities, both on the client facing side and for the production, “This facility gives us not just space, but presence,” he explains. “It allows for structured production, better logistics and a world-class experience for visiting clients. The impression this place makes in the first seven seconds of a visit? Priceless.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/335643/image/large-e49fa729cc677c5512f53336db22deb7.png" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/335643">What about growth? Should we expect to see an uptick in production?“We want to grow – but with purpose. The aim is to deliver a smaller number of yachts, with higher quality and more flexibility. This allows us to maintain close relationships with our clients and build exactly what they want.”Fanizza’s vision extends beyond the yacht itself. “Luxury today is about personalisation and service. You walk into a luxury boutique and they know your name, your coffee preference, your dog’s name. That’s the level we aim to offer at every touchpoint.” He stresses that this is not an attainable goal when building hundreds of yachts per year, another motivation factor when it comes to the production line. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/335648/image/large-2ce0f6f90bd039e1a97df0b9d530afc4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/335648">Let’s talk about the commercial side. What markets are you focusing on?“We’re targeting three key regions – the Americas, Europe and the Middle East. Each has its own culture and will be developing separate strategies for each. Until now, the group didn’t have a proper international sales network. That’s a huge opportunity for us – especially since we’re not chasing high volumes. We only need a small number of sales to hit our targets, so we can focus on doing it right.”Another major part of the strategy has involved the team and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6468" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Next Yacht Group (Company)">Next Yacht Group</a> has announced some solid talent acquisition in recent months, such as Roy Capasso, the new head of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1205" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="AB Yachts (Company)">AB Yachts</a> sales. “We’ve already brought in new talent and we’re working hard on internal communication, training and team culture. We’ve got a clear strategy: fix the product range, clarify brand messaging, elevate customer experience and expand commercially. And thanks to the team, we’re making huge strides on all fronts already.”&nbsp;Fanizza has also come into this role in a challenging period for the global economy, but it is clear that he feels <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6468" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Next Yacht Group (Company)">Next Yacht Group</a>’s size and focus will enable it to ride the wave of upcoming challenges. “The situation is unpredictable – especially with political changes – but it affects segments differently. That said, we’re prepared to adapt quickly. The former yacht owner and Formula 1 team boss Eddie Jordan has died at age 76. A statement made by Jordan’s family on Thursday morning revealed that he had passed away in his Cape Town home following a cancer diagnosis in December 2024. The Irishman was the owner of several yachts, including the 45.6-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/51" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Perini Navi (Company)">Perini Navi</a> sailing yacht Blush (now named <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/43" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Mare Nostrum45.26m (148'6&quot;)Perini Navi2007">Mare Nostrum</a>) during his lifetime.&nbsp;As a former driver himself, the businessman won the Irish kart championship in 1971 but suffered an accident in Formula 3 in 1976, before transitioning to team ownership in the year 1979. <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/353276/image/large-df8254dd787bb5de9005e52062fe4b28.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/353276">While his Eddie Jordan Racing team started with 12 people in 1987, it eventually amounted to 50 members once Jordan took part in F1 in 1991. Pilli emphasised the dual benefits this initiative brings for <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/895" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Lusben Shipyard (Company)">Lusben</a>. “The new inspection pit is the largest currently available in the Mediterranean and it is extremely versatile: on one hand, it allows work to be performed on sailing yachts up to 70 metres, and on the other, thanks to two concrete slabs that cover the pit, it can be used for work on motor yachts, extending the space available at the shipyard for 'classic' refit operations,” Pilli explained.Pilli’s fresh approach, epitomised by the keel pit initiative, aligns with broader industry trends. Discussing these trends, he pointed out that the sailing world is poised for a revival, driven partly by an increasing focus on sustainability. “This shift towards seeking non-polluting alternatives is something we inevitably must embrace,” he stated. "Our immediate focus is on completing the significant investments we have initiated here.
