This year alone has brought forth an array of designs that throw caution to the wind. The 45-metre Martini catamaran, for instance, designed by <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6546" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Servo Yachts (Company)">Servo Yachts</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shuttleworth Design (Company)">Shuttleworth Design</a>, features twin mechanical hulls that battle the waves to, as Justin Ratcliffe aptly described, fend of “Rock ‘n’ Roll”. Then there’s the <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/82" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Espen Øino International (Company)">Espen Øino</a> designed concept which intersects the characteristics of CAT and SWATH yachts, in a bid to improve sustainability by reducing drag. The list goes on…&nbsp;Three concepts deserve particular attention though, as the shared innovational drive is rooted not just in sustainability, but pivot on changes to the wheelhouse itself. An area which hasn’t been the subject of radical penmanship for some years now. The concepts are: <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6523" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="3deluxe Ocean (Company)">3deluxe</a>’s VY-01, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6491" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Merveille Yachting (Company)">Merveille</a>’s line of Eco-explorers and the 81.75-metre Pure from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>.Revolution has never looked so green<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219923/image/large-55bbf34ab73f9d19926313eb9ce4fab5.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219923">The 110-metre VY-01 concept radically overthrows traditional and bends the expected into a lush haven filled with meandering rivers, tall trees and a natural habitat. The onboard sanctuary, in lieu of a main saloon, may have been the lodestar for the designers but it also led them to rethink the wheelhouse – in order to stretch the interior landscape to this full extent, it had to be moved.&nbsp;“We want to stir things up,” Björn Asmussen, Director &amp; Executive Architect at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6523" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="3deluxe Ocean (Company)">3deluxe</a> explained. “The components of ships are normally stacked on top of each other, because that’s what makes sense. You have your technical equipment in the engine house, then your crew cabins and you build up on that vertical stack. So every technology that allows us to free up a component paves the way for innovation.”<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219921/image/large-fa88c2b592a77eb8ea9e97cee50e3bb9.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219921">Asmussen explained that digital innovations have expanded the boundaries of creativity as these advancements whet the appetite for what can be possible. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6523" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="3deluxe Ocean (Company)">3deluxe</a> has expressed very clearly that it’s target demographic is an owner daring to adventure and experiment with the very idea of yachting. The wheelhouse is part of this vision. “The intent of the concept is to embrace all technology. If it’s possible to incorporate remote navigation, then why not? With an AR setup, the owner or captain could steer the yacht from any location; they could be in the yacht’s garden, or up on one of the terraces and not forced to be in the Wheelhouse.”As it stands, the wheelhouse is very forward, more so than normal. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6523" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="3deluxe Ocean (Company)">3deluxe</a> nestled it in between the A pillars of the superstructure to increase the spatial offering in the midsection of the yacht, giving more room to the park and the owner. It did come with a problem though: visibility. “Where it’s situated there is a fairly decent view for the captain; however there will be a few blindspots. AR will help overcome this, as we can install cameras and screens to re-open these spaces for the human eye.”Interactive and fully immersive <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219925/image/large-78079e8636b65246101c5823fa5a08a4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219925">In a slightly different vein, but just as radical, is the idea of incorporating dual controls. Nicolas Cantenot and Jerôme Vollet, the creative leaders of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6491" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Merveille Yachting (Company)">Merveille Yachting</a>, have been compelled to do just this with their line of Eco-explorers.&nbsp;The lineup is driven – as the name suggests – to reduce the ecological footprint of yachting post-construction. The yachts, both in catamaran and monohull form, are characterised by large automated Oceanwings that jut out from the superstructure and which are but one part of the line’s ‘eco’-DNA. What goes slightly unnoticed though is the changes that <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6491" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Merveille Yachting (Company)">Merveille</a> has made to the traditional helm to encourage onboard interaction. &nbsp;“We often hear how owner’s feel that they are missing out from the experience itself as they are separated from the operations of the yacht and they don’t get the chance to be in control,” Cantenot said. “That is why we’ve incorporated dual controls to our yachts, situated on the skydeck, so that guests can take control and be fully immersed in the full experience.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6491" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Merveille Yachting (Company)">Merveille</a> hasn’t stopped there either. The wheelhouse is equipped with large screens to give the captain and the crew 360° view of the sea and the yacht’s surroundings. “This is another important aspect of creating a fully immersive onboard harmony,” Vollet added, “as it removes all barriers between the captain and the guests.”Enclosed Command Centre: An exercise in trust?&nbsp;<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/219924/image/large-4cd204500e28212b8e987cdd72ea1700.jpeg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/219924">The 81.75-metre concept Pure is an art of extremes. <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> and <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/30" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="De Voogt Naval Architects (Company)">Studio De Voogt</a> have spearheaded innovation in a bid to redefine what’s possible. Heading their agenda was flexibility and a commitment to reimagine typical GAs to give future owner’s the prime onboard real estate.&nbsp;“With a traditional arrangement of the engine room and bridge you're stuck, you lose a great deal of flexibility,” Giedo Loeff, Head of Research and Development at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a>, explained. “Because of new technology though, you can shuffle this arrangement, freeing up space and moving areas of a yacht previously untouchable.”<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/29" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship (Company)">Feadship</a> is proposing an entirely blind wheelhouse that fully embraces video and image processing technology so that it can be located anywhere enclosed. “We recognise that the Command Centre is a controversial proposal that may lead to resistance, but such solutions are already common on subs and naval vessels,” Bram Jongepier, a senior specialist at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/30" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="De Voogt Naval Architects (Company)">De Voogt Naval Architects</a>, previously said.Read:&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Article/53771" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Feadship’s latest ‘Future Concept’: The 82m hybrid Pure (2021-09-24 16:00:00 +0200)">Feadship’s latest ‘Future Concept’: The 82m hybrid Pure</a>At first glance this may seem like an exercise of trust, with the captain navigating a vessel from even the lower enclaves of the vessel; however, with the advantages of innovative tech, this may not be the case. Video and image processing technology has proved that it can be used to complement the essential systems – visibility, navigation, etc. – in the commercial shipping sector. As Jongepier said, in subs and naval vessels for years now.“We have been in contact with surveyors – and yes, we think it is feasible,” Loeff said. “You never know for sure if anything will be accepted. You have to make a design, you have to submit all the plans and then you get your firm approval. It’s not something that gets an approval from the get-go, we need to be the movers on this.”Theoretically great, but is it practically sound? <img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/178419/image/large-db7a1a901e20a6a72ed9bfd5641ecee2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/178419">To properly get a handle on just how practical these innovations are, we sat down with Mike Rouse, captain of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1821" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Damen Yachting (Company)">Damen Yachting</a>’s 72.15-metre <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/5955" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Game Changer72.15m (236'9&quot;)Damen Yachting2017">Game Changer</a>, to hear his insights.&nbsp;“Cars have AR these days, planes have had it for years, you can even get it in sunglasses,” Rouse commented. The technology might be novel in the yachting sector but it’s not new elsewhere and has been making strides in multiple other industries.“Every element of our daily lives is in a constant march towards greater technology, integration of life's devices. I agree that the wheel house has not really changed over the years, small advances in technology but fundamentally they have remained the same,” continued Rouse.“If it can be done in submarines and navy vessels it can be done on yachts. Yachting exists for a select few to have an amazing holiday in absolute luxury, the better the experience we can offer owners, charterers and guests the more people will want to engage with this industry. If that means learning some new skills and relocating the wheel house then l am all for it. Like all ‘drastic’ changes it would take some getting used to but over time it would be the new norm,” Rouse concluded.&nbsp;There will be a few hurdles that need to be overcome – the biggest, of course, getting the advancements certified by a surveyor. But if this can be done, then we may start seeing great changes riding off the back of this, not just with the wheelhouse itself but traditional configuration of yachts and the overall experience may get refreshed. All three concepts have the potential to bring this and to change the face of yachting entirely. Are wheelhouses driving the change in yacht design?

In addition, the design creates less drag than conventional fins, resulting in a more efficient and faster vessel in less than perfect conditions.“The result is a vessel that can move at speed through an ocean swell with virtually no motion in the suspended deck where the crew and guests are located,” says Orion Shuttleworth, Managing Director of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shuttleworth Design (Company)">Shuttleworth Design</a>.<iframe width="640" height="360" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/i_-d-9tApqY?&amp;wmode=opaque" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="" class="fr-draggable"></iframe> Martini 7.0 is the latest and most advanced 50-metre design in development. The superstructure has been widened to maximise the interior volume and cover the full beam of the two hulls. Connected by four articulating mechanisms positioned at each corner of the suspended deck housing the main accommodation, the patented suspension technology still provides over 3.5 metres of vertical travel in each hull, resulting in minimal motion for both guests and crew.<img src="https://photo-assets.superyachttimes.com/photo/212360/image/large-39466758a459fbe05e3ca1ecc64cfec0.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/212360">Unlike the previous aluminium prototypes in the Martini series, the suspended deck of Martini 7.0 is engineered for construction in lightweight carbon fibre and foam cores. The main engines and onboard systems are housed in the hulls, making more space available in the suspended deck for guest use and services.At nearly 430 square-metres, the upper deck is home to the main social and entertaining area. Sliding doors lead forward to a spa pool surrounded by sun pads on either side and al fresco dining on the open aft deck. &nbsp;The master suite occupies the entire forward section of the main deck and is complete with a private office, gym and spectacular views through a large wraparound window. Moving aft there are four ensuite guest cabins, two of which overlook 195 square-metres aft deck with pool.The lower deck comprises the crew accommodation, galley, stores, workshop, dive store and a garage with space for an array of water toys and a 6.5-metre tender. When the suspended deck is lowered the garage becomes a wet dock for tender operations without cranes or winches. The bathing platform can be lowered into the water for easy access to the sea when scuba diving or swimming.David Hall, the founder of <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6546" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Servo Yachts (Company)">Servo Yachts</a>, also set up Velodyne Lidar and invented a 3D vision system that spawned the development of autonomous vehicles. Like this vision invention, the suspension system adjusts to feedback received in real-time based on a computer-automated electro-mechanical system. As an active technology it is faster than passive marine stabilisation devices that take more time to react to the motion of waves. The system requires very little power and no warm-up time or vacuum systems as with gyroscopic stabilisers."Growing up, I spent my summers on my grandfather’s boat, where I developed a deep appreciation for marine travel,” says Hall. “With the Martini 7.0, I believe we have found a way to solve seasickness and significantly improve the sailing experience so that everyone can enjoy traveling on the ocean. I am very excited for Servo Yachts to continue to push the boundaries of marine technology and transform ocean travel. Ideas for better ways to do things are always out there floating around, and it's up to us to find a way to make it happen."

If you were looking to describe the position of catamarans and trimarans within the larger superyacht fleet, you might end up saying something like: ‘they’re a bit niche.’ Looking at the statistics, there are a grand total of 58 motor and sailing multihulls above 24 metres currently in operation at the time of writing and a further nine in build, of which 90% are catamarans. Owners keen to go even more niche could opt for a trimaran boat, of which there are a total of six boats in operation in the entire global fleet of 6,676 yachts over 24 metres.&nbsp;That said, for such a small player where the numbers are concerned, multihulls have certainly garnered their fair share of media attention over the years. The next morning I was up early at 6am and I went for a swim in the bay of Cannes. The sun came up and at that moment I thought, I’m going to buy <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2328" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Che34.72m (113'11&quot;)Sunreef Yachts2010">Che</a>.I negotiated with the broker, Charles Ehrardt from <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/6" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Camper & Nicholsons International (Company)">Camper &amp; Nicholsons</a>, but he suggested that I speak to the owner directly. So we set up an appointment with the last owner in his office in Antwerp, we had a really nice talk about sailing and life in general. I liked him so we managed to put the deal there at a good price which we were both happy with. She was a 45-foot trimaran cruiser-racer and she was built out of wood/epoxy in the Philippines by a couple of itinerant boat builders. Since then, I’ve stayed friendly with John and we’ve enjoyed going sailing together. After the shipping market went up all of a sudden, I had money which I could spend wisely and so I cooked up <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2714" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adastra42.5m (139'5&quot;)McConaghy Boats2012">Adastra</a> with John: she took three or four years to build, which cost far more than I thought it would. I really like the trimaran format because it looks good, it’s seaworthy, the shallow draft is easy to push, and I was used to multihulls from an early age anyway. My first boat was called Split Second because I was getting back from the BVI, did a sea trial, went to the Cannes Boat Show and bought a Lagoon 620 as a sort of split-second decision. Aptly named for a vessel which looks like it has just landed from outer space is the 42.5-metre power trimaran <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2714" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adastra42.5m (139'5&quot;)McConaghy Boats2012">Adastra</a>, (‘Ad astra’ being a Latin phrase which translates as ‘to the stars.’) Taking off from the drawing boards of British designer <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shuttleworth Design (Company)">John Shuttleworth</a> and landing at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/276" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="McConaghy Boats (Company)">McConaghy Boats</a>, <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2714" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adastra42.5m (139'5&quot;)McConaghy Boats2012">Adastra</a> came together in Zhuhai, China and was completed back in 2012.&nbsp;Her owner, shipping magnate Antony Marden - who goes by ‘Anto’ - commissioned the boat from his friend <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/1555" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Shuttleworth Design (Company)">John Shuttleworth</a> and has been world-cruising on her ever since. She was a 45-foot trimaran cruiser-racer and I had her built out of wood/epoxy in the Philippines by a couple of itinerant boat builders. I stayed friendly with John ever since and sailed together. John has that combination of technical knowledge - he’s a computer whizz kid - married to artistic accomplishment.When the shipping market went up all of a sudden, I finally had a bit of money to spend wisely and so I talked to John and we cooked up <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2714" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adastra42.5m (139'5&quot;)McConaghy Boats2012">Adastra</a>. It took about three or four years to fiddle around with it and three or four years to build, which cost far more than I thought it would. But they’re very good at building hulls at <a data-gid="gid://syiq/Company/276" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="McConaghy Boats (Company)">McConaghy</a> and the interior also went well.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/7518/image/large-ee73cadec63fc6f585f693d218867e70.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7518">What have been some of your cruising highlights on board&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2714" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adastra42.5m (139'5&quot;)McConaghy Boats2012">Adastra</a>? &nbsp;The Fijian Islands were good and going all the way through Indonesia, Raja Ampat, and the Anambas Islands are lovely - that’s north of Singapore. Quite honestly the Greek Islands offer really, really good cruising because they’re close together. The weather isn’t too rough and each island is a lovely destination. You can always go to the taverna and there’s something happening there, it’s very pleasant actually. Greece is the best place to go to the Mediterranean.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/7483/image/large-163c5711da58212e01d432fe0de289a8.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7483"> What are your favourite things about&nbsp;<a data-gid="gid://syiq/Yacht/2714" href="#managed-by-system" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" title="Adastra42.5m (139'5&quot;)McConaghy Boats2012">Adastra</a>&nbsp;as an owner?&nbsp;Firstly, there’s her seaworthiness: we can go to sea in almost any condition. We’ve left marinas in the middle of the night into a howling gale and people are aghast! It’s a bit of a waste to have her sitting there not doing anything just waiting for me to turn up, so I’m pulling my horns in.I’ve got another yacht called the Hung&nbsp;Twa which is also 120 foot, she’s steel patrol type boat made in China designed by Nigel Irens, another famous multihull yacht designer. I’m going to use her for cruising around Southeast Asia.&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/7504/image/large-11a43716c50943e898afd58a3fabb4f6.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7504">Do you have a specific buyer in mind?&nbsp;He who pays the money does whatever he or she likes with it. I’m not sure there are too many people like me who want to sail around and explore different parts of the world. Like a retired hedgefund guy from America who has always been a sailor and wants to go world cruising, that would be one, but I think it’s much more likely that it’ll be the boy racer type, one of the oligarchs, 40 years old who wants to park her in Formentera and impress the babes.&nbsp;Because she’s actually quite small, there are only three cabins so she is very different from a superyacht: it’s more like a family sailboat operation. It’ll probably be quite a long campaign. I wouldn’t expect her to be sold quickly, because there are only a certain number of people who want to buy, out of that number, half of them aren’t ready and half of them don’t have the money: there are too many variables to expect her to be sold quickly.<img src="/uploads/store/photo/7470/image/large-13aaf0f782b3987b51f9d5db1254b2b0.JPG" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7470">Are you looking to expand your fleet going forward?I’ve got my islands in Indonesia, including Pangkil and Pulau Joyo. Antony Marden, the owner of the unique 43m trimaran yacht Adastra, shares his inspiration for the vessel and his reasons for putting her for sale.

To celebrate Chinese New Year, we take a look at some of the coolest Chinese-built superyachts on the water today: Gong Xi Fa Cai! &nbsp;(Happy New Year!) Nero&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/5649/image/large-1630a1b7f3ed16aa9ce1385232eb66c1.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/5649"> No list of awesome Chinese-built superyachts would be complete without mentioning the 90.1-metre modern replica superyacht, Nero&nbsp;built by Corsair Yachts and delivered in 2007.&nbsp;Nero’s timeless lines were inspired by the 1890s superyacht&nbsp;Corsair,&nbsp;which was&nbsp;commissioned by the American financier, banker and art collector, JP Morgan. Nero&nbsp;features classic interiors from Neil Taylor designs which hark back to her 1800s heritage. That said, Nero also boasts modern features, including a swimming pool, two VIP cabins with saloons, two custom tenders and a 5.5-metre side boarding platform ideal for diving, swimming and boarding the yacht. Qing&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/16075/image/large-cd2d98f0d447168300c96c2276c3cda2.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/16075">Next up, it's Qing.&nbsp;Previously called Mazu,&nbsp;the 46-metre superyachtQing&nbsp;was built by the Chinese shipyard Cheoy Lee and launched in 2010. Sporting a distinctive red hull, Qing&nbsp;was the second of MCC's Marco Polo Transocean Explorer series and underwent an extensive refit in Brisbane last year at Rivergate Marina and Shipyard. Her exterior design is from Ron Holland, and her interiors are by KCA International.&nbsp; King Baby&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/25831/image/large-28701c54c73f0e767e30f73485c067fc.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/25831">Recently spotted in St Lucia by the SuperYacht Times team, King Baby&nbsp;is a 41-metre superyacht built by IAG Yachts and delivered in 2015. This GRP superyacht was built for an American family and has a generous 497 GT internal volume in order to accommodate the whole family, making her the largest composite motor yacht delivered in China to date. Inside, King Baby&nbsp;features a rock and roll inspired interior by Evan K. Marshall, including an authentic Fender Stratocaster guitar gipped in chrome.&nbsp; Serenity&nbsp;<img src="/uploads/store/photo/21883/image/large-b15dd634d3f37254b40dc9963839b957.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/21883"> Serenity&nbsp;is a 40.4-metre superyacht which was launched by the yard IAG Yachts&nbsp;in April 2016. Sporting exterior and interior design again from Evan K. Marshall, Serenity&nbsp;can reach a respectable top speed of 18 knots and has a cruising speed of 15 knots. With a gross tonnage of 363, Serenity&nbsp;boasts an enormous interior volume, bringing with it a great deal of versatility for her owner's use.&nbsp; Adastra&nbsp;&nbsp; <img src="/uploads/store/photo/7519/image/large-3f2d2dd49c0ec9ae63788d2615b15dce.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/7519"> Last, but certainly not least, is the eye-catching and futuristic multihull superyacht Adastra. Built in 2012 by McConaghy Boats, Shuttleworth Design in England is the team responsible for her space-like exterior, who designed the custom yacht to be built with a carbon fibre and Nomex honeycomb cockpit with a glass/Kevlar hull. Adastra has a cruising speed of 17 knots and can reach 22.5 knots as her top speed.

Superyacht Adastra in Naples, Italy

The futuristic multihull superyacht Adastra has arrived in the Mediterranean this summer season after a period spent in the Pacific and the Caribbean last year. The yacht was built in 2012 by McConaghy Boats in China. Shuttleworth Design in England is the team behind her space-like exterior and designed the yacht to be built with a carbon fibre and Nomex honeycomb cockpit with a glass/Kevlar hull. The custom built Adastra travels at a speed of 17 knots and is capable of reaching 22.5 knots as her top speed.

The 42.5m trimaran superyacht Adastra in Naples

The British multihull specialists, Shuttleworth Design, has launched project MARS (Mayflower Autonomous Research Ship), whereby the company is attempting to create a fully autonomous unmanned vessel to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The event date has been set for the year 2020, marking the 400th anniversary of the original crossing of the Mayflower from Plymouth, England, to Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts in USA.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/155771/image/large-9fa57002f6a9836c2ddddffbad631a70.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/155771">Being developed in association with Plymouth University, MARS will be a state-of-the-art vessel over 100ft in length, able to sail unmanned with an unlimited range by relying on solar technology to power its propulsion system. She will be fitted with a two-masted soft sail rig enabling MARS to reach a top speed of 20 knots, and capable of sailing with one or both sails hoisted. Shuttleworth Design is known for having designed the superyacht Adastra project.John and Orion Shuttleworth comments, "A trimaran was chosen because it provides the most efficient hull form for low speed motoring. The hull configuration developed from a requirement to reduce windage, while keeping the solar array sufficiently high above the water to reduce wave impact. Without the need for accommodation, the centre hull has been kept low to the water and the wings and deck are separated and raised above on struts. Unmanned vessel designed to undertake historic Atlantic crossing

The company states that all of their latest trimaran designs are heavily based upon that of the 42.5 metre superyacht Adastra which was launched in China in 2012 and has gone on to be the recipient of a multitude of awards in the industry.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152587/image/large-84ec7da6ca2dd6a08b02621ead852bf4.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152587">The latest 32 metre concept has been designed with long distance voyages in mind, boasting a range of over 6,000 nm at a speed of 12 knots and a top speed of 23 knots. She has been noted for her particularly impressive fuel efficiency. In addition, her interior spaces have been maximised to provide both spacious and comfortable accommodation located on the lower deck for up to four guests and a two crew whilst offering excellent seakeeping, stability and efficiency. Her interior spaces have been conceived as open plan, but can also be compartmentalised when required.In regards to her outside spaces, she provides plenty of space and amenities for guests to fully enjoy the superyacht experience. Her flybridge presents a large shaded seating area surrounded by low coamings that ensure exceptional views when on board. In addition, a BBQ and the helm station are found in this area. Elsewhere, the aft deck also features a BBQ area, as well as a lazarette and storage space for various water toys. Though the 4.9 metre and 3.1 metres tenders are also stored on the aft deck, once launched this area further opens up to provide an ideal space for sunbathing and relaxing.<img alt="" src="https://syt-store-production.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/photo/152588/image/large-1befcbbec64be07d062d11144d37fb25.jpg" data-gid="gid://syiq/Photo/152588">The 70 metre trimaran design further accentuates the company’s dedication to fuel efficiency as well as a real ocean going yacht, with a range of 7,000 nm at a speed of 14 knots. She boasts a top speed of 25 knots that can be increased to 30 knots with alternative engine options.She accommodates up to 12 guests on board as well as 14 crew, including a luxurious dedicated owner’s deck containing an office lounge and opulent suite, as well as a foredeck sunbed and lounging area. On the main deck four guest cabins are found, as well as a VIP cabin located in the bow. Further guest accommodation is based in the wings of the vessel, allowing for expansive living areas on the main deck. In order to maximise guest privacy, a central column houses separate guest and crew staircases, a lift and technical area.Outside, an external walkway around the bridge deck gives the crew clear visibility for docking and maneuvering. A forward facing sofa behind the helm station provides a relaxing space for guests to observe operation of the vessel, and the aft deck has a large sun pad with optional spa pool, an ample seating area and a bar. The aft garage houses a demountable 16ft Hobie cat, a 7.5 metre tender and a dive store with a fold beach and dive platform. Other tenders and water toys include a 4.9 metres (SOLAS) RIBS and two Yamaha jet skis.

Radical trimaran superyacht Adastra launched

Palladium Technologies, Inc. has been awarded contracts for the new 42 metre Trimaran M/Y Adastra. This unique project was designed by John Shuttleworth Yacht Design, Ltd. and is being built by McConaghy Boats in Zhu Hai, China. Plans are to launch M/Y Adastra in early 2011 with her cruising grounds expected to be in the beautiful waters of Indonesia. “As a testament to our commitment to being a ‘Total Solutions’ technology company, Palladium has been awarded many extensive projects, especially overseas,” said Mike Blake, president, Palladium Technologies. Palladium’s continued expansion into the electrical arena means they will be providing the electrical designs for such items as: AC/DC load analysis, AC/DC power distribution, motor control circuits, and emergency and yacht lighting circuits. The electrical systems will be comprised of Titan switchboards, Titan AC/DC distribution panels, shorepower conversion, lighting systems, A/V entertainment, bridge electronics and a navigation light control panel. All the aforementioned items interface to the SiMON monitoring, alarm and control system. SiMON will also be monitoring 269 points with two main monitoring and alarm stations. One is located at the bridge and crew area along with a secondary alarm notification in the engine room. A Consilium fire detection system will be designed to notify the crew and guests of a potential fire. SiMON-C, Palladium’s camera security system, will contain a DVR server located on the bridge supporting up to eight cameras. Digital motion detection, camera recording and playback are some of the features of this system.
